Q’s Questions COs LL
How does the engineering stress-strain diagram differ from the true stress-
1 CO1 L1
strain diagram? Explain with a neat Sketch.
Deduce expressions to determine the elongation of
2 i. a bar of tapering section CO2 L1, L2
ii. a trapezoidal section of uniform thickness.
3 What are failure criteria? How are they related to modes of failure? CO2 L3
Deduce the expressions for stresses on an inclined plane in a body subjected
4 CO3 L3
to a bi-axial stress condition.
At a point on the surface of a generator shaft, the stresses are 𝜎𝑥 = -50 MPa,
𝜎𝑦 = -10 MPa, and 𝜏𝑥𝑦 = - 40 MPa,
Using Mohr’s circle, determine the following quantities:
(a) the stresses acting on an element inclined at an angle
ϴ=45°,
5 CO3 L2
(b) the principal stresses, and
(c) the maximum shear stresses.

(Consider only the in-plane stresses, and show all results on sketches of
properly oriented elements.)
Define the terms: resilience, proof resilience, modulus of resilience, Principal

plane, and pure shear.
7 Explain in detail the procedure for constructing Mohr’s circle of plane stress. CO2 L3
