Model Answers of Sheet 1
Chapter 1: Circuit Variables
1. Determine the current flowing through an element if the charge flow is given by
a) 𝑞(𝑡) = 5𝑡𝑠𝑖𝑛(4𝜋𝑡) 𝑚𝐶
b) 𝑞(𝑡) = 20𝑒 −4𝑡 cos(50𝑡) 𝜇𝐶
Solution:
dq
i = = 5 sin(4 t ) + 5 t (4 ) cos(4 t )
dt
= 5 sin(4 t ) + 20 t cos(4 t )
at t = 0.5s
i = 5 sin(2 ) + 10 cos(2 ) = 0 + 10
= 31.42 mA
b)
At t=0.5s → i(t)= 7.118 µA
2. How much energy is imparted to an electron as it flows through a 6 V battery from the
positive to the negative terminal?
Solution:
w = qV = (1.6022 × 10−19)(6) = 9.61 × 10−19 = 0.961 aJ
3. The voltage and current at the terminals of the circuit element in Fig. 1 are zero for 𝑡 <
0. For 𝑡 ≥ 0 they are
𝑣 = 400𝑒 −100𝑡 sin 200𝑡 𝑉,
𝑖 = 5𝑒 −100𝑡 sin 200𝑡 𝐴.
Find the power absorbed by the element at 𝑡 = 10𝑚𝑠.

4. The voltage and current at the terminals of the element in Fig.1 are
𝑣 = 250 cos 800𝜋𝑡 𝑉, 𝑖 = 8 sin 800𝜋𝑡 𝐴
a) Find the maximum value of the power being delivered to the element.
b) Find the maximum value of the power being extracted from the element.
c) Find the average value of 𝑝 in the interval 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 2.5 𝑚𝑠.
Solution:

sets of numerical values, calculate the power in the interconnection and state whether the
power is flowing from A to B or vice versa.
