Sheet 2 Model Answer
Chapter 2: Circuit Elements
1. If the interconnection in the figure 1 is valid, find the total power developed by the
voltage sources. If the interconnection is not valid, explain why.
Fig.1
Solution:
The interconnection is not valid. Note that the 3 A and 4 A sources are both connected in the
same branch of the circuit. A valid interconnection would require these two current sources to
supply the same current in the same
direction, which they do not.
2. Consider the interconnection shown in Fig.2,
a) What value of 𝑣1 is required to make
this a valid interconnection?
b) For this value of 𝑣1 , find the power
associated with the voltage source.

3. Consider the interconnection shown in Fig.3
a) What value of α is required
to make this a valid
interconnection?
b) For this value of α, find the
power associated with the
current source.
c) Is the current source
supplying or absorbing
power?
Solution:

4. Consider the circuit shown Fig.4:
a) Find 𝑣0 using Kirchoff’s laws and Ohm’s laws.
b) Test the solution for 𝑣0 by verifying that the total power supplied equals the total
power absorbed.

7. In Fig.7, the voltage across the 16 Ω resistor in the circuit is 80 V, positive at the upper
terminal.
a) Find the power dissipated in each resistor.
b) Find the power supplied by the 125 V ideal voltage source.
c) Verify that the power supplied equals the total power dissipated.

9. Given the circuit shown in Fig.9 find
i.The value of ia
ii.The value of ib
iii.The value of Vo Fig.9
iv.The power dissipated in each resistor
v.The power delivered by the 50V source.
Solution:
10. For the circuit shown in Fig. 10, find
i. The voltage v;
ii. The power delivered to the circuit by the
current source; and
iii. The power dissipated in the 10Ω resistor.
Fig.10
Solution:
V = 60 V , p 5 A = −300 W , p10 = 57.6 W

11. For the circuit shown in fig.11,
find
the current i1 in microamperes and the
voltage v in volts.
Fig.11
Solution:
Applying KCL at node (1) , gives
i 500 = i 1 + 40i 1 = 41i 1
i 500 = 41i 1
Applying KV L at loop (a )
−3 + 29.5k (i 1 ) + 0.5 + 0.5k (41 i 1 ) = 0
i 1 = 50 A
Applying KV L at loop (b )
− 0.5k (41i 1 ) – V 1 – 2.4k (40i 1 ) + 10 = 0
V 1 = 10 − (0.5k 41 + 2.4k 40) (50 A )
V 1 = 4.175 V
12. The current iφ in the circuit shown in Fig. 12, is 2 A. Calculate:
i. Vs;
11
ii. The power absorbed by the independent
voltage source.
iii. The power delivered by the independent
current source.
iv. The power delivered by the controlled current
source.
v. The total power dissipated in the two resistors.
