Tutorial Sheet-9
1. Draw the pitch circle. Use only the follower positions given below.
2. Draw the displacement diagram for a follower in order to satisfy the following conditions. The lift of
the follower is 2.5 cm. The outward stroke takes place with simple harmonic motion during 90o of cam
rotation, and the return stroke, also with simple harmonic motion, during 75o of cam rotation. The follower
is to dwell in the out position for 45o of cam rotation. Use graphical and analytical methods.

3. A follower is to move gradually outward 2.5 cm with a simple harmonic motion for a rotation angle of
150 degree and return for a subsequent rotation of 210 degree in a simple harmonic motion. Write the
analytical expression/s for the displacement of the follower.
4. In a cam-follower mechanism, the follower needs to rise through 20 mm during 60o of cam rotation, the
first 30o with a constant acceleration and then with a deceleration of the same magnitude. The initial and
final speeds of the follower are zero. The cam rotates at uniform speed of 300 rpm. The maximum speed of
the follower is ________ mm/s (nearest integer)
5. The follower movement in a cam-follower mechanism with a translating flat-face follower is given by
The limit on the contact stress requires that the minimum radius of curvature of the cam profile should not
be less than 100 mm anywhere and during the rise period the driving effort should not have an eccentricity
more than 40 mm. Determine:
(a) minimum permissible base circle radius
(b) minimum required offset
(c) minimum width of the follower if an allowance of 2 mm is desirable on both sides.
6. The displacement function of a cam mechanism with a translating follower during rise is
y 10 / cm 0 /2
2
y 5 10 1 / cm /2
2
Radius of the roller is 7.5 cm and the magnitude of the pressure angle during rise should not exceed 30 o.
Determine the minimum permissible base circle radius and the necessary offset. With these values of the
offset and the base circle, what will be the expression for the radius of curvature of the cam profile during
the first part of the rise? The cam rotates in the CCW direction.
7. Layout a cam profile using a harmonic follower displacement (both rise and return). Assume that the
cam is to dwell at zero lift for the first 100o of the motion cycle and to dwell at a 2.5 cm lift for cam angles
from 160o to 210o. The cam is to have a translating, radial, roller follower with a 2.4 cm roller diameter,
and the base circle radius is to be 3.8 cm. The cam will rotate clockwise. Layout the cam profile using 20o
plotting intervals.
(This has to be submitted. Assignment is created in Moodle)
8. A follower rises through a distance L with cycloidal motion for 0 ri , where is the cam rotation.
Determine the value of for which the acceleration of the follower is maximum. Find the velocity and jerk
for ri / 2 . The cam rotates at a constant speed .
9. A flat-faced follower is driven using a circular eccentric cam rotating at a constant angular velocity ω.
At time t=0, the vertical position of the follower is y(0)=0, and the system is in the configuration shown
below.
2
Using geometrical method or otherwise, the vertical position of the follower face, y(t) is obtained
as___________.
10. A plate cam drives an offset flat-face follower with simple harmonic motion for a rise of 5 cm. The
follower moves out and returns in one revolution without any dwell. The base circle radius is 2.5 cm, and
the offset is 1 cm. Find the parametric equations of the cam profile.
