A ring may be considered thin in the radial direction if the variation of stresses
along the thickness is negligible and can be ignored.

Consider a thin ring rotating about its centre of mass as shown in Figure.
A flywheel with a moment of inertia of 300
rotates at 300 rpm. If the maximum stress is not
to exceed 6 MPa, find the thickness of the rim.
Take the width of the rim as 150 mm and the
density of the material 7400 Neglect the effect
of the inertia of the spokes.
