Tacloban City, within the province of Leyte, Philippines, with coordinates approximately
11.2481 latitude and 124.9720 longitude. The elevation at these coordinates is estimated
to be around 26.6 meters or 87.3 feet above sea level. Nula-tula is nearby to the
barangays of Brgy. 94 (Tigbao), Brgy. 74, Brgy. 73, Brgy. 91 (Abucay).

Nula Tula exhibits a diverse terrain, including urban environment with a flat terrain, coastal
areas with
sandy beaches, and some regions with steep slopes. The predominant vegetation types
found in the area are mangrove forests along the coast, tropical vegetation such as
coconut trees in the lowlands, and forested areas with various tree species in hilly areas.
Nula-tula is divided into two, the Upper and Lower Nula-tula.

The chosen site is a

residential house located at Purok Tisa, Upper Nula-tula along the newly constructed
Tacloban bypass road. The one-storey residential house is facing west and sits atop an
elevated plain. Furthermore, a mountainous region is situated from its south spanning to
its west.

II. Site Materials

The residential building’s materials are composed of both man-made and natural
materials. Given that the site is placed at a mountainous location, the place is abundant in
natural physical features.
The table shown below represents the man-made materials and natural
materials that can be found at the site.

Man-made Materials Natural Materials/ Features

Concrete Trees

Glass and Metals Stones

Plywoods and Plyboards Mountain Ranges

Lumber Soil
Corrugated Metal Sheet Bamboo

The above-mentioned materials had a significant role as to why the residential building
stands today. Columns are made up of steel bars and concrete while its trusses are made up of
lumber. Its walls are made of both concrete and wood. The lower part of the wall is made up of
concrete while they used plywoods and lumber for its upper part. Its floors were mostly concrete
and partly bamboo, they have concrete floor from its receiving area to its bedroom, on the other
hand, its floor on the kitchen is made up of bamboo. They have sliding windows which are made
up of glass and metal, while doors are made up of plywood and lumber. Lastly, the materials
used on its gable roof are corrugated metal sheets.

The site is surrounded by trees, which helps in providing shade and assisting the airflow
of the place. It also helps to strengthen the soil to avoid landslides. The site also receives a
good
amount of wind brought by the Northeast and Southwest monsoon caused by the mountain
ranges spanning from its south to its west. However, due to the presence of a mountainous area
from its south to its west, sunset cannot be seen at the site.

Micro Climate
In the new location, the site is influenced by urban structures and spaces, creating a more
concentrated heat environment. Shade is provided by nearby trees and structures, but the area
experiences heat retention typical in urban settings. Cooling occurs at night, especially due to
breezes from the nearby bay.
Flood risk is minimal due to the elevation, though nearby areas are more vulnerable during
heavy rainfall. However, the urban heat island effect may increase heat levels in the day.

Given that the site is surrounded by plants and tall trees which provide shading to the
residential house, thus the site does not experience extreme hotness. The site has a good
airflow since the plants and trees also help in circulating wind flow. Further, coolness can
be experienced at the site during night time and when raining.
Since the residential house sits atop an elevated plain, it is not prone to flooding.
However, the site is located in a landslide prone area. Although trees help strengthen the
soil, if extreme heavy rainfalls occur, there's a possibility that the soil softens, thus
causing landslides.

As inhabitants and occupants of the said residential house, through an interview made
with one member of the family, it is worthy to consider their experiences with the site. It
is found out that they also feel hotness sometimes, especially when weather becomes
extremely hot, that's why they are in need of artificial ventilations. Additionally, Day
lighting is just enough to be used as natural lighting during daytime which helps energy
saving. Outdoor spaces are just enough to be utilized for activities. Further, given that
the site is along the bypass road, it is in great exposure to noises.
