PROBLEM SET NO. 2

Prepared by:
ENGR. KEVIN JOSE S. MAGISTRADO
Instructor I

1. Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate the fact

(a) 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 ⊂ 𝐶
(b) 𝐴 ⊂ 𝐵 ∪ 𝐶

2. For each of the following pairs of sets A, B, find A ∪ B and A ∩ B:

(a) {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐}, {𝑐, 𝑑, 𝑒, 𝑓}
(b) {𝑥 ∈ 𝑅 | 𝑥 < 0}, {𝑥 ∈ 𝑅| 𝑥 ≥ 0}
(c) {1,2, {1,2,3}}, {1, {1,2}}

3. Prove the following statements:

(a) 𝐴 ∩ ∅ = ∅
(b) 𝐴 ∪ ∅ = 𝐴
(c) 𝐴 ∩ 𝐴 = 𝐴 ∪ 𝐴 = 𝐴

4. By considering the sets 𝐴 = 𝑅, 𝐵 = 𝑄, 𝐶 = 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑠, show that it is not

always the case that (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) ∩ 𝐶 = 𝐴 ∪ (𝐵 ∩ 𝐶)

5. Given two sets A, B, the set difference A − B is defined to be the set

𝐴 − 𝐵 = {𝑥 |𝑥 ∈ 𝐴 ∧ 𝑥 ∈ 𝐵}
Prove the following:
(𝑎) 𝐴 − ∅ = 𝐴.
(𝑏) ∅ − 𝐴 = ∅.
(𝑐) 𝐴 − 𝐵 = 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵.

6. The Hilbert Hotel, named after the famous German mathematician (and set theory
pioneer) David Hilbert, has an infinite number of rooms. The rooms are numbered 1,
2, 3, etc. One evening — it was a Super Bowl weekend — all the rooms were booked.
But late that night, an unexpected VIP turned up and asked for a room. Fortunately,
the desk clerk had been reading Keith Devlin’s book Sets, Functions, and Logic. With
a bit of rearranging, the clerk was able to arrange matters so that the VIP got a room
and so did everyone else. How did he do it?

7. The following evening the rooms were all still booked, but an infinite number of new
guests arrived, all without reservations. The clever desk clerk was again able to
arrange matters so that all the new arrivals got rooms and so too did the guests who
had advance reservations. What did the clerk do this second night?
