Education: Grade 2, Vincent Palloti School (ICSE).

Brief History:

Vikram was born in a non-consanguineous marriage. No antenatal or postnatal complications reported.


He had mild delays in speech and motor developmental milestones. He was referred to us for a
psychoeducational assessment. He has been diagnosed with inattention and hyperkinesis and has been
receiving special education in addition to regular schooling.
Vikram has difficulties with reading, writing, spellings and mathematics. While writing, he writes
letters reversed and most of his notes are incomplete. He finds it difficult to sit in a place for long and
has poor attention span for academic tasks. A detailed evaluation has been planned for Vikram.

Tests Administered:

1. Binet Kamat Test of intelligence (BKT)


2. Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS)
3. NIMHANS Battery for Specific Learning Disability (NIMHANS SLD)

Behavioral Observations:

Vikram was very compliant for the evaluation. He maintained eye contact and was conversational. He
was friendly and rapport could be established. He was fidgety but sat throughout the assessment. His
overall speech and comprehension was adequate. Attention could be aroused but sustained only with
redirections.

Test findings:
On the BKT, Vikram’s Mental Age (MA) was found to be 6 years and 6 months with a corresponding
Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of 80 indicating low average level of intellectual functioning. His function-
wise performance in various domains is given below-

Language 6 years
Memory
Meaningful 5 years
Non-meaningful 6 years
Conceptual 4 years
Reasoning
Non-verbal 6 years
Verbal Not yet attained.
Numerical 7 years
Visuo-motor 7 years
Social intelligence 7 years
On the BKT, Vikram was able to answer simple questions. He could match colours, shapes and group
them, and copy designs. He was able to answer questions related to social reasoning. He could solve
simple problems.

On the Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS), Vikram obtained a social age of 6 years 9 months
and a social quotient of 84 indicating low average level of social maturity and adaptive behaviour. He
is semi dependent for most of his daily activities as most of the tasks are done for him.

NIMHANS Specific Learning Disability (NIMHANS SLD)


Vikram was assessed using the NIMHANS-SLD to assess his current grade of academic performance
to plan his further academic goals.
Language
• Reading : In reading, his reading skills were between Grade 1-2 level. He made errors in Grade
2 level and could not read from Grade 3 level onwards.
• Writing : In writing, he was not able to write on his own.
• Comprehension : His comprehension was at Grade 2 level.
Spelling
A grade wise standard spelling test was conducted for the assessment. In the spelling test, he was able
to say spellings in grade 1 level. He could not write from Grade 2 level onwards.
Arithmetic
He could do only simple and graded addition and simple subtraction. His mathematical operation skills
were at Grade 1-2 level.
A grade wise evaluation for second and third languages were conducted. His skills were below Grade
1 level.
On the Conner’s Rating Scale – Parent, it is seen that Vikram does not pay attention and makes
careless mistakes in school. He has difficulty with arithmetic skills, reading, and spellings. He is
forgetful and sidetracked easily. He has significant attention issues and is constantly moving. He has
trouble organizing tasks and completing hard tasks. he was also reported to be fun and cheerful.
On the Conner’s Rating Scale – Teacher, it was reported that Vikram forgets to turn in completed
work, has difficulties with attention and concentration, he is excitable and impulsive. He has academic
difficulties as well.

Summary and recommendations:


On the BKT, Vikram had obtained an IQ of 80 indicating low average intellectual functioning. On the
VSMS, he obtained a social quotient of 84 indicating low average social skills and adaptive behaviour.
In the academic skills he has difficulties with reading, writing, comprehension, spellings, and
mathematics.
His overall academic skills are 1-2 grades lower than expected levels. Based on the evaluation, we
recommend continuing sessions with a special educator. He has significant difficulties with attention
span as well which needs to be monitored. a detailed evaluation of the same can be scheduled in 2
months.
We recommend retaining him in the same grade next year to help learn basics of mathematics and
English.
A review in 2 months and a re-evaluation after 1 year is recommended.
