1 Introduction
The Evaluation Software can be run independently of the METTLER TOLEDO Software. If the
Software is however already installed, the Evaluation Software cannot be installed on the same
computer.
You can evaluate data from a TA system. The Evaluation Software includes all the features that
are included in the base software version of the Software Evaluation Window. It is not possible to
install software options, however.
Additionally, the Evaluation Software includes the System tab which features commands to load,
backup and rename databases. It also features commands to rename the user of the database and to define
the folder in which the database is stored.

To import data into the STARe Evaluation Software the following commands can be used:
• Load command on the Database menu
• Import command on the File menu
You can import databases from a TA system running version 9.20 or later of the Software by
using the Load command on the Database menu. Please follow the instructions in the online Help for this. It
is however not possible to load databases from earlier versions by using the Load command on the
Database menu.
To load a database backup that was created with versions 11.00 – 15.00, an offline backup must be
available. For more information about online and offline backups, see [Installation procedure } Page 7].
Loading such a database requires administrative rights. If it is not turned off, the User Account Control
prompt in Windows appears when you start the database load operation.
Data from earlier versions of the Software than version 9.20 can be imported by using the Import
command on the File menu.
You can import the data you have evaluated with the Evaluation Software into the Software as
follows:
• Export the data using the Export command on the File menu of the Evaluation Software.
• Import the data into the Software by using the Import command on the File menu of the
Evaluation Window.
Please see the online Help for detailed instructions on how to use the Evaluation Software.
The following installation instructions show you how to install the Evaluation Software and its
components.

2 Software requirements
One of the following Windows® operating systems should be properly installed before you install the
Evaluation Software.
• Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate (64-bit editions only)
• Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise (64-bit editions only)
• Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise (64-bit editions only)
Please note that Evaluation Software 16.00 cannot be installed on 32-bit Windows editions.
In sections of the following text that apply to all of the above mentioned operating systems, the name
"Windows" is used for short, referring to all these operating systems. Where it is necessary to refer to only
one particular operating system, the full name is specified.

Your hardware must meet the following requirements:

• To install the Evaluation Software, a Windows user with local administrative rights assigned is
required.
• Sufficient space must be available on your hard disk. 6 GB free space is recommended.
Enough disk space for your own records in the database must be provided. Typically, 1 GB extra space is
recommended. Please take into account that twice the amount of disk space as required for the database
must be available additionally to perform a backup of a database.
In general, not more than 90% of the hard disk space should be used.

6 Supplements to the standard Windows installation​​


5 Installation procedure
The following procedure is recommended for the installation of the Evaluation Software. Besides the
actual Evaluation Software program components, database management system (DBMS) software is
also installed.
Install the Evaluation Software
1 Log on as a local Windows user with administrator rights.
2 Extract the .zip file into a local folder. Then run the file
setup.exe.
3 Reboot your PC.
4 If no earlier version of the Evaluation Software was installed previously: On first start of the
Evaluation Software, prepare for normal usage as follows:
• Define the database folder (see below).
• Load a database (see below).
Define the database folder
The Define Database Folder dialog box appears on first start.
1 To create a default database folder C:\STAReDB as indicated in the Database Folder box, click OK.
- or -
To create a different database folder with a different path or name, enter the path and name of the
desired folder in the Database Folder box or navigate to the desired folder by clicking the ellipsis button
(...). Then click OK.
Note
Administrative rights are required to create a new database folder. If it is not turned off, the User Account
Control prompt in Windows appears when you create a new database folder.
2 Click OK.
ð The specified database folder is created.

Load database
The Load Database dialog box appears on first start.

1 Under Source, select the source from which you want to load the database:
• To load a database from a hard disk or a network drive: Click Backup File on Disk. Then click the
ellipsis button (...) and navigate to the database file you want to load or enter its path and file name in
the File box.
• To load an original METTLER TOLEDO database that corresponds to the ICTA sign convention: Click
Original ICTA Database (ICTA: "Exothermal effects upward, endothermic effects downward").
• To load an original METTLER TOLEDO database that corresponds to the anti-ICTA sign convention:
Click Original A-ICTA Database (Anti-ICTA: "Exothermal effects downward, endothermic effects
upward").
2 Click OK to load the database.
Note
You can cancel the procedure at this point by clicking Cancel.
ð The load process is started and a dialog box is displayed showing how far the load process has
progressed. The dialog box is closed automatically when the load process is completed.
ð You have now loaded the database.
If problems occur during the load procedure, you can obtain additional information by opening with a text
editor file qdb_mnt.log in the subfolder log of the installation folder of your Evaluation Software. In
the default installation the path is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\METTLER TOLEDO\STAReSW\log

6 Online and offline backups
It is not possible to use database backups from Evaluation Software versions 11.00 – 15.00 with version
16.00 that have been backed up with the Online Backup command.
Please not that the Backup command in Evaluation Software versions 11.00 to 12.10 corresponds
to the Online Backup command available in Evaluation Software versions 13.00 and later. However,
the Offline Backup command is not available in these versions.
In Evaluation Software versions 14.00 and later the Online to Offline Backup Conversion command
can be used to convert an online backup of a database to an offline backup. There are however the
following restrictions as to which versions of the Evaluation Software can be used for the conversion:
• Online backups created with Evaluation Software versions 11.00 - 14.00 must be converted by
using Evaluation Software 14.00.
• Online backups created with Evaluation Software 15.00 the must be converted by using
Evaluation Software 15.00.

7 Update procedure
The following instructions summarize the update procedure. It is important that you carefully follow the
instruction steps in the given order.
The update procedure includes backing up your database as a safeguard. This is essential to ensure that
your data is still available if any problems should occur during the update. The database remains available
after the update has been completed.
Please note that Evaluation Software version 16.00 can only be installed on 64-bit editions of
Windows. See [Software requirements } Page 4].
If you have installed version 13.00 or later of the Evaluation Software:
1 Start the Evaluation Software.
2 Create a backup of your database by using the Offline Backup command on the Database menu.
3 Close the Evaluation Software.
4 Install the Evaluation Software according to the installation procedure in section [Installation
procedure } Page 7].
If you have installed version 11.00, 12.00 or 12.10 of the Evaluation Software:
1 Start the Evaluation Software.
2 Create a backup of your database by using the Backup command in the Database menu.
Note
The Backup command in Evaluation Software versions 11.00 to 12.10 creates online backups
which have to be converted to offline backups before they can be loaded with Evaluation Software
16.00. See [Online and offline backups } Page 9].
3 Close the Evaluation Software.
4 Install the Evaluation Software according to the installation procedure in section [Installation
procedure } Page 7]
If you have installed version 10.00 or 10.01 of the Evaluation Software:
You have to uninstall the Evaluation Software first. Additionally, the DB2 Express-C database
management system (DBMS) has to be uninstalled.
1 Start the Evaluation Software.
2 Create a backup of your database by using the Backup command in the Database menu.
Note
The Backup command in Evaluation Software versions 10.00 or 10.01 creates online backups
which have to be converted to offline backups before they can be loaded with Evaluation Software
16.00. See [Online and offline backups } Page 9].
3 Close the Evaluation Software.
4 Uninstall the Evaluation Software.
5 Restart the Windows operating system.
6 Uninstall the DB2 Express-C database management system.
7 Delete the local Windows user named stareusr. To do this, open the User Accounts dialog in Windows
Control Panel and click Manage User Accounts.
8 Install the Evaluation Software according to the installation procedure in section [Installation
procedure } Page 7].
