I. Core Competencies
The Community Internship (CH 240) is a 4-quarter Municipal Health Unit rotation for medical students. It
is offered during the fifth year in the medical curriculum. During this exposure the students are expected to be
able to apply and integrate the concepts and principles learned during the 4 years in the medical program to
create, implement, evaluate, and improve health programs at the RHU level.
The physicians have various role to play as health professionals. The students therefore, being
physicians-in-training, are honed to acquire the skills needed for their future profession. They are expected to
become healthcare providers, health program managers, social mobilizers, health educators, and health
researchers. The table below shows the professional roles with the corresponding terminal and intermediate
competencies expected for each student.

1. What other qualities should a physician working as an MHO should possess? Why?
Answer: A Municipal Health Officer (MHO) plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health within
a community. An MHO must demonstrate strong leadership to inspire and guide public health
initiatives. Effective communication is vital for an MHO. He/She must convey health information,
guidelines, and policies to the public and stakeholders in a way that is easily understood. This skill
also extends to active listening, which helps the MHO to understand community concerns and
needs. An MHO should be sensitive to the cultural, social, and economic factors that influence
health behaviors and outcomes.

communicate, assess, and manage. It should be an honest appraisal of yourself. Include the challenges which

constructive feedback

health issues, also improve my ability to provide compassionate care to the community people.
