About VNSGU:
Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, as envisaged in the University Act, is to contribute to the field of higher
education in the region and enable its inclusive development in all walks of life by making available trained
personnel in various branches of human knowledge, keeping in mind the larger goals of nation-building. The
University is committed to maintain high standards in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, promoting
research and undertaking the requisite extension activities that would reach out to every section of society. Veer
Narmad South Gujarat University has endeavoured to be an institution of excellence in higher education since its
existence, keeping in view the regional needs and the emerging trends in the global scenario. A semi-urban
University located at Surat city, the University has a campus spread over 210 acres. The mandate of the University
is to meet the developmental needs of the seven districts and two Union Territory in the region and attempt sat
realizing their potential in every walk of life ranging from technology, business, industry and commerce to
language, culture, and fine arts. The University is committed to the ideal of excellence of the highest order, as
evidenced by its constant revision of existing syllabi and continuous addition of new courses. It aims at optimal use
of all its resources in creating a knowledge society, where rigorous scholarship and high ethical standards are
blended to meet the challenges of the 21st century India.

Introduction of the Department:


The Department of Library and Information Science has been imparting higher education in Library and
Information Science field on the basis of self-finance programs. The Department offers courses in Bachelor of
Library and Information Science since 1986-87 and Master of Library and Information Science (Part-Time since
1994-95 and now Regular base 2012-13).
The Department has made an arrangement to impart education on the basis of experienced and skilled guest
faculty members. Extensively, the multimedia system is being used during the lectures to make students
understand the subject. After completing the course, the students are placed as librarians in various public,
private, special, educational and industrial libraries. Apart from this, many other avenues are available also to
them. An association of the students of this Department "LISA" (Library and Information Science Student
Association) is also functioning. The association renders its services with the help of internet to its members about
the vacant positions in the field as well as information related to competitive examinations like NET and SET. The
university has provided facilities to the Department for the promotion of higher education; hence M. Phil and
Ph.D. programmes are being introduced from the academic year 2013-14.

To provide leadership in Library and Information Science education by imparting quality and innovative teaching
through research, academics and the ideal youth to society.

• To impart quality and skill-based Library and Information Science education for improving leadership quality
• To furnish ingenious teaching and learning methods
• To Impart skill-based training with aptitudes for meeting the needs of Global Information Society
• To Cooperate with sister departments and achieve a centre with potential for excellence in Library and
Information Science

 Description

Objective Of Program
 To educate the students to respond to the changing information needs of society.
 To give the students an understanding of the basic principles and theories of Library and Information
Science.
 To develop proficiencies and abilities of students essential for management of libraries and
information systems.
 To enable the students to understand the role of libraries and information centres in socio-economic
development of the society.
 To acquaint the students with information and communication technology and its applications in
libraries and information centres.

Program Outcome
Bachelor of Library & Information Science (B.L.I.Sc) will prepare the students to obtain positions as
Information Scientist, Librarian, Academicians in any Library related Field.

Intake
Number of Admission : 50 Seats

Program Duration
 The program shall be full time regular program.
 The duration of program shall be of one year (Two Semesters)

Pattern
Pattern of Examination will be Semester System.

Attendance
Minimum attendance for keeping a semester is 80 % of the total number of theory and practical periods
in each semester.

Eligibility Criteria
A graduate degree in any faculty are eligible to Bachelor of Library & Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.)
course
 Eligibility Criteria

A candidate who has a graduate degree in any faculty shall be eligible to apply for Bachelor of Library
& Information Science (B.L.I.Sc).

 Admission

Admission Details

An application in the prescribed form along with necessary testimonials for admission to the B.L.I.Sc.
Course must be accompanied with prescribed fees. The last date of application for the admission for
B.L.I.Sc. Course shall be notified by the University on the university website.

Refund Of Money

 Library Deposit shall be refunded only at the end of the course after making such deductions as
may be required. A student shall withdraw his/her amount of deposit within six months after the
declaration of results. If not withdrawn within the prescribed time, it may be forfeited.
 No other fees are refundable.

 Fees Structure : As decided by VNSGU.

 Description : Master of Library & Information Science (MLISC program is especially designed for the
graduate students who have their bachelor degree from the field of Library science, The curriculum
of this program match the need of the Library software and Library knowledge.

Objective Of Program

Ph.D. In Library and Information Science

 Description: Department of Library and Information Science offers doctoral programme. The Ph.D.
Program help students to explore the various areas like library management in different institute, use
of information technology in library, comparative study of various library software, studies of various
libraries and its management system, knowledge organization, information processing and retrieval.
The department provides many facilities for Ph. D. scholars like - SOUL software, Open access in
University library, research centre to review the previous Ph. D. thesis.

Objective Of Program
1) Familiarity with various methods of conducting empirical research.
2) Familiarity with importance research and concepts.
3) Ability to assess the benefits of research applied to social sciences.

Program Outcome
PO1: To aware students with various libraries, its services and rules of various libraries.
PO2: To develops critical thinking, problem-solving, evaluative learning of various techniques in libraries, and
understanding the essence of the problem.
PO3: To allow students to dive into the deep and vast ocean of rich Library Literature. It will enhance their
understanding of the development of library literary traditions and values.
PO4: To help students to have a better understanding of the ideas trending in World Library literature.
Students can learn about various customs and traditions of different cultures of the World Library
through the library Literature.
PO4: To improve students' knowledge and will equip them with the necessary practical work of classification,
cataloguing and computers.

3 Years minimum as per UGC norms

Admission Details
Admission is on the basis of the UGC NET/JRF, GSET & result of entrance test conducted by University
and followed by presentation of research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee (RAC).

Infrastructure & resources
The Department of Library and Information Science has a dedicated Ladies’ Rest room to
cater to over 90 percent of the girls’ students in the department. The furnished room has
the facility like cradle for new born, dressing table and two beds for any health
emergencies. This apart it has also feeding area for nursing mothers. The department has
also purchased a sanitary pad vending machine apart from incinerator to burn the used
pads. Recently the department could purchase 70 desktops for a newly refurbished
computer laboratory in the department. The department also houses a beautiful seminar
hall catering to an audience of around 150 persons. The hall is one of the most sought
after one on the campus for various academic and cultural purposes.
