the acceptable journalistic standards .

Responsibilities of a Copyreader
1. Edits errors in grammar (spelling, tense, subject-verb
agreement, etc.)
2. Edits errors in facts (accuracy checks)
3. Judges news value (grading of news)
4. Edits word copy (keeps the copy tight)
5. Writes the headline if the needs arise
6. Must be well-read and updated on the general and current
information
7. Must be well versed on law of libel
Headline Writing

Headline serves as the title


of an article in the newspaper. It
gives a quick glimpse of what the
article is all about.
Qualities of Headline Writers
1.Possess a keen sense of news values.
2.Able to pick out significant thoughts.
3.Expert with words- expressive, active, short words
4.Accurate in grammar
5.Cleaver in expression
Classes of Headlines According to Purpose

1.Headlines designed to inform


(the most commonly used)
Ex. House Okays $350B Aid
2. Headlines designed to intrigue
Ex. Tanodbayan Jumped Gun or Retrial?
Steps in Headline Writing
1.Read the whole story to understand its
message.
2.Underline the key words from its lead, which
are the bases for headlining.
3.Using the key words from the lead, write a
short telegraphic sentence summary
of the news.
Steps in Headline Writing
4. Use the shortest words possible. Substitute simple
effective synonyms to fit the headline within the
allotted space.
5. Divide it according to unit of thoughts into the
number of required lines or deck.
6. Use colorful noun or vigorous and active verbs
7. Start with noun followed by verb.
Rules in Headline
1. The headline must have a verb implicit or explicit and must be in
present tense.
WRONG: Tenorio bagged national awards
CORRECT: Tenorio bags national awards

2. Do not use period.

3. Minimize punctuation marks. Use single quotation marks. Use comma


in place of “and” and a semicolon to separate sentences.
WRONG: Rolling stores to sell rice and groceries
CORRECT: Rolling stories to sell rice, groceries

4. Do not use the articles a, an, the
WRONG: A fire hits Tondo squatters’ area
CORRECT: Fire hits Tondo squatters’ areas
5. Do not use names unless the person is well-known or being
recognized for an achievement.
WRONG: Cruz dies in car mishap
CORRECT: Businessman dies in car mishap

6. Use infinitive for future events


WRONG: City Hall will push anti-squatting drive
CORRECT: City Hall to push anti-squatting drive
7. Use specific terms instead of generalities
WRONG: School official gets scholarship
CORRECT: Principal gets US scholarship
8. The first letter of the headline should be in capital letter and the rest are
all in lower case except for the proper nouns, if the paper is following this
commonly-used style
WRONG: Student government launches new projects
CORRECT: Student Government launches new projects

9. Do not use the school’s names or initials in headlines. The newspaper is


about the school; thus, it is so redundant to still include it. Instead, make
use of the space for other vital information
WRONG: Angel M. del Rosario HS celebrates Buwan ng Wika
CORRECT: Buwan ng Wika highlights Phl festivities
10. Avoid opinions or interpretations in headlining.
WRONG: Huge group of students conduct vigil
CORRECT: 300 studes conduct vigil

11. The –ing verb form should only be used if the events are presently
happening during the release of the newspaper
WRONG: Filipinos are hoping for Pacquaio’s victory today
CORRECT: Filipinos hoping for Pacquiao’s victory today

12. Do not split a verb phrase


WRONG: Priests, nuns to
visit youth camp
CORRECT: Priests, nuns to visit youth camp
13. Do not divide preposition and its object
WRONG: Freshman gains praises for
act of heroism

14. Do not split an adjective and the noun it modifies

15. Do not separate names that belong together

Rules in Acronym
Acronym is derived from the
combination of the first letters
or syllables of the words or
name of an organization. Here
are the rules to follow.
1. For four-finalized acronym and below, all letters should
be capitalized like in
WHO for World Health Organization
UN for United Nations and;
MILF for Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
2. For more than four-letter acronym, only its first letter is
capitalized like in
Asean for Association of Southeast Asian Nations

3. For syllabic acronym, the first letter of each syllable of
