INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Parenting style is conceptualized as a constellation of attitudes or a pattern of parental

authority towards the child which are conveyed to the child, creating the emotional context
for the expression of parent behavior. Parenting style differs from parenting practice in
that it characterizes parent–child interaction across settings and situations, whereas
parenting practices are specific to particular situations and domains (Leung & Tsang Kit
Man, 2014). While, Mental health is a multifaceted concept encompassing psychological,
emotional, and social well-being. The World Health Organization defines it as a state
where individuals realize their potential, cope with life's stresses, work productively, and
contribute to their community (Galderisi et al., 2015). Studies show that parental practices
have a big impact on teenagers' mental health. Parenting that is permissive may result in
worse mental health outcomes, yet authoritative parenting is linked to better mental health
outcomes (Singh et al., 2021).

Studies conducted globally have consistently shown a strong relationship between

parenting styles and a child's mental health. For instance, a meta-analysis by Baumrind
(2000) found that authoritative parenting, characterized by warmth, structure, and
responsiveness, is associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression in adolescents.
Conversely, authoritarian parenting, which relies on strict rules and punishment, has been
linked to higher levels of stress and emotional problems. Baumrind thinks that normal
parenting focuses on issues of control and that the primary duty of all parents is to
influence, teach, and control their children. The construct parenting style is used to
capture typical variances in parents' attempts to manage and socialize their children.
(Sulaiman & Musa, 2024). The study conducted on children of Japan by, Sakamoto,
(2014), showed positive impact of authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting
styles on children’s later mental health.

Numerous studies conducted in the Philippines have also recognized the importance
of parental participation in the mental health of Filipino adolescents. Cruz and dela Cruz
(2018) investigated the connection between Filipino students' teenage depression and
parenting practices. According to their research, a higher risk of depression was linked to
permissive parenting, which is characterized by a lack of control and a high level of
attachment. As said by Sapunga and Sapungan. (2014) states that including parents in
their children's education is equivalent to stating that the school takes the initiative to
promote changes or foster student growth. Teachers and school administrators have a
better likelihood of implementing quality transformation in education when parent
involvement increases.

The results of recent research on parenting practices in the Philippines are mixed.
Teenage moms in Mindanao typically take an authoritative parenting style, which is
followed by authoritarian and lenient methods (Benito, 2022). However, in Digos City, the
main factor influencing juvenile offenders' violence was authoritarian parenting,
suggesting a strong link between parenting practices and delinquent behavior (Sarno,
2020). The frequency of mental health problems among instructors and students in a
variety of educational settings has been brought to light by recent studies. In the
Philippines, public school teachers reported minor symptoms of anxiety and depression
along with moderate stress levels (Clarion & Palarisan, 2023).

While numerous studies internationally and nationally have explored the relationship
between parenting styles and mental health among adolescents, a significant research
gap exists within the Davao City context. Despite the growing awareness of mental health
concerns among senior high school students in Davao City, no known studies have
specifically investigated the correlation between parenting styles and mental stress levels
in this population. This gap highlights the need for a localized investigation that examines
these factors within the unique social, cultural, and economic environment of Davao City.
By addressing this research gap, the study can provide valuable insights into the specific
needs and challenges faced by senior high school students in Davao City, contributing to
the development of targeted interventions and support programs to enhance their mental
well-being.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to determine the relationship of parenting styles and mental health
among senior high school students of Mintal Comprehensive Senior High School.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of parenting styles in terms of:

1.1 Permissive;
1.2 Authoritative; and
1.3 Authoritarian?

2. What is the level of mental stress experienced by the student in terms of:
2.1 Physiological Stress;
2.2 Emotional Stress; and
2.3 Social Stress?

3. Is there a significant relationship between parenting styles and mental stress levels
among senior high school students at Mintal Comprehensive Senior High School in
Davao City?
