CASE STUDY
SECTION A
Altogether Jerk Ltd will be a competitive privately owned 50-seat restaurant offering home-cooked food
that is popular in that area of the Caribbean. lt will provide grilled and steamed foods: pork, chicken, fish
and baked yams, potatoes and other breadstuffs, along with vegetables and an assortment of natural fruit
drinks. The restaurant will be owned and operated by Karl and Krystal Bennett who have owned and
managed a number of other successful businesses. The management team collectively has over 20 years'
experience in the restaurant business. The owners intend to employ an operations manager, a chef, several
kitchen assistants, several waiters and two cleaners. While the firm hopes to provide in-house dining, it
would also specialize in takeouts. The managers are aware of the importance of proper documentation
and transparent business practices. Together they have created a detailed plan which includes all the
elements for success.

The managers would like to use the smell ofjerk, healthy, large sized platters, Caribbean background music
and the Friday evening band to attract patrons to the restaurant. The restaurant will be tastefully decorated
with local wood and steel, and painted in bright tropical colours. The chairs and tables will be made from
metal and wood, giving a rustic look. Carefully conducted market research and evaluation of the target
market revealed that the firm was poised to cater to a segment that was not being served. Despite this, the
firm intends to use technology to intensely market its products and services. The managers would also
draw on their many years of marketing experience and aim to be proactive, building sales volume over
profit especially in the first three years of operation. They recognize that they would require a delivery
van and possibly a bike.

INSTRUCTIONS: The following case study contains information for a business plan. Read the
case and answer the questions that follow.
CASE STUDY
SECTION A
M&E Juices Limited started as a small business in the home of its owner, Marlene Cross, who operated
the business as a part-time activity while she was employed elsewhere. She made juices from fresh fruits
and vegetables, bottled and sold them to friends and other associates. The business was very successful.
After two years, Marlene decided to make it more formal. She resigned from her job to concentrate full
time on the business. No longer able to carry out all the business activities by herself, Marlene recruited
four employees and set up a structure for the business. She subsequently registered the business and she
and her husband, Edward, are the only owners and directors. In addition to being the manager, she is
also directly responsible for the production department. Edward is responsible for sales. He is assisted
in this area by a delivery man. Both Marlene and Edward are pleased with the team of employees and
have implemented strategies to enhance team building.

The business could no longer be accommodated in Marlene's home. It was relocated to leased premises
in a busy commercial district. The most reliable supplier of fruits and vegetables, Palmer Farms, is now
located a short distance from the business. M&E Juices Limited is also within walking distance of a
number of facilities including a fitness centre and an educational complex. In addition to delivering to
retail outlets and doing door-to-door deliveries, Edward has designed a plan to sell juices over the counter;
a promotional campaign is part of this plan. All of this was done in an effort to seize the opportunities
