4.3 More Distributions!

Geometric Distributions

Geometric Distribution — This distribution counts the number of trials that take place
until the 1* success is achieved.

Random variables start at: |

NOTE: Very similar to Binomial, however you do NOT have a set number of trials!

It is known that 18% of the deer population carries a disease known as chronic wasting
disease. (It is also known that many college age students begin to waste their life after
achieving personal freedom.) The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, ODNR,
decides to hunt and test deer until it “harvests” a diseased deer to examine.

a) Create a distribution that shows the likelihood of each killed deer being the first
diseased deer that they have caught. (It’s a bit confusing, but it will sink in).

b) What is the probability that the first killed deer has the disease?

c) What is the probability that the ONDR doesn’ | g a killed deeruntil the 4" deer?

gaecinpd + (18, Y) = 0,099 '

d) What is the probability of getting a diseased deer as one of the first four deer?

If looking at failures in a row, can treat like old school multiplication:

e) What is the probability that you do not get a diseased deer in the first three trials?
