Channel Flow with

Extended Surfaces
Unstructered Meshing

Engr. Dr.-Ing. Usman Allauddin

Assistant Professor,
Mechanical Engineering Department,
NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi.

1. INTRODUCTION
This tutorial will guide you through the creation of un-structured mesh of 3D channel flow with extended
surfaces case in Workbench. The boundary layer at the cylinder is to be fully resolved by the first cell with y +
= 1 and Expansion factor 1.2.

2. GEOMETRY NOMENCLATURE
The following image shows the basic geometry of the case:

The dimensions of the geometry are:

3. OVERVIEW
The following are the tasks of the tutorial:
i. Prepare the geometry in Design Modeler of Work Bench.
ii. Do un-structured meshing of the geometry.

4. SET UP & GENERAL GUIDLINES

i. It is highly recommended that you create a new directory to work in. Several files will be created and it
is much easier to find them later if they are all in a new directory.
ii. Note that the ANSYS set of programs (including CFX, Fluent and ICEM) are unable to read directory
names with space characters in them. This means that the name of the new directory and the path
leading to the new directory must not have any spaces.

5. STARTING THE PROGRAM

All Programs → ANSYS 16.0 → Workbench 16.0

Or

Search in the run tab with keyword “Workbench” and open it. Firstly Workbench launcher will be opened.
Right click in the View Window and open “Geometry” as new component system:

Double click “geometry” to open the DesignModeler

Some general names for different parts of the DesignModeler window will be used to help identify where
certain commands are found. These are all labeled in the following image:

6. PRE-PROCESSING
6.1 Geometry Preparation
i. Units (main menu) → millimeter

ii. Left click on ZX plane in “Project Tree Outline”, then right click ZX plane and select “Look at”:

iii. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Draw → Rectangle:

iv. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Dimensions → Horizontal:
H1: To give Horizontal dimensions, first click y-axis and then the right extreme vertical edge of the rectangular
geometry, drag it to any suitable location and left click to come out from this option to give horizontal
dimension “H1”

v. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Dimensions → Vertical:

V2: To give Horizontal dimensions, first click x-axis and then the top extreme horizontal edge of the
rectangular geometry, drag it to any suitable location and left click to come out from this option to give
horizontal dimension “V2”

vi. Details View Window → Dimensions → Give: H1=525mm and V2=50mm. Click screen fit after
giving the dimensions.

vii. Modelling → Left click on ZX plane in “Project Tree Outline”, then add a new sketch on this
plan:

viii. Modelling → expand ZX plane in “Project Tree Outline”, then select “Sketch2”:

ix. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Draw → Rectangle inside bottom left of big rectangle:

x. Select all four edges of the newly created rectangle then Project Tree Outline → Sketching →
Constraints → Equal Length:

xi. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Dimensions → Length/Distance:

xii. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Dimensions → Horizontal (H4 = 7.5mm) & Vertical (V5 =
7.5 mm). Also give L3 = 10 mm

xiii. Modelling → Left click on ZX plane in “Project Tree Outline”, then add a new sketch on this
plan:

xiv. Modelling → expand ZX plane in “Project Tree Outline”, then select “Sketch3”.

xv. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Draw → a vertical line at the right of the big rectangle:

xvi. Select the line and extreme top vertical edge of the rectangle then Project Tree Outline →
Sketching → Constraints → Vertical.

xvii. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Dimensions → Horizontal (H6 = 75 mm):

6.2 Create Parts
i. Commonly used options → Face Selector → select OUTLET → Create Named Selection:

Similarly create parts named: INLETS, TOP, BOTTOM, BOTTOM-EXTENDED, FRONT, BACK,
BLOCKS-TOP, BLOCKS-SIDES

NOTE: Right click on part “Wall” and hide it. It will help in selecting other surfaces. Do the same with
other parts

6.3 Meshing
i. Go to Workbench main launcher and add “Mesh” as a new component. Drag “DM Geometry”
into the “Geometry” of “Mesh” as an input.
