Queen Mary University of London Students’ Union (the Students’ Union) is a representative and
campaigning organisation providing high quality services, activities and opportunities for Queen Mary
University of London (QMUL) students. The Students’ Union’s mission is ‘To Listen, To Act, and To
Improve Students’ Lives” and it works towards objectives such as building an authentic student voice,
supporting meaningful connections and prioritising students’ mental health. The Students’ Union also
operates a Sport and Fitness Centre, shops, cafes, bars, events and hospitality services through its
wholly owned trading subsidiary QMSU Services Ltd. All the profits from these commercial outlets help
to fund the services provided by the Students’ Union.
The role sits within the Communications and Marketing team who are responsible for ensuring the
Students’ Union resonates with all students and that they’re aware of the opportunities and services on
offer to them to help them love their time at university. This is achieved through the delivery of creative
and engaging marketing campaigns and communications for the team’s projects and the charitable and
commercial services. These campaigns are delivered via offline, online, print and digital channels. The
team is also responsible for the Students’ Union’s brand, creative & design, photography/videography,
website, social media, email campaigns, PR and on-campus experiential marketing.
The role will be predominately based at the Mile End campus in an open plan office in the Students’
Union Hub building, which is also used by staff from the teams of Student Voice, Student Engagement,
Customer Services and the Executive Officers.
Job purpose
The Web Developer will take the lead on all things web and mobile apps, managing the maintenance
and ongoing development of the Students’ Union website, membership and content management
system (MSL: Membership Solutions Limited), app platforms (QMSU Perks Loyalty App and QMSU
Sport & Gym App) and other online platforms such as Google Suite / Google Business pages and the
Freshworks online chat service. The Web Developer will take web design and UX projects from start to
finish to support the delivery of effective marketing campaigns that engage our student audience, whilst
working to ensure the website and apps are kept up to date and act as useful resources for students
and staff. The postholder will also work to ensure the Students’ Union website is kept up to date and
secure, whilst providing support to our charity and commercial teams with their website requirements.
• To lead on front-end and back-end web development work and maintenance, covering all aspects of
the Students’ Union’s web estate and providing solutions to a variety of design related and technical
issues.
• To manage and produce webpages, template pages and styling widgets using a variety of coding
languages including HTML, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Bootstrap and other relevant coding libraries
and frameworks.
• To manage, schedule and undertake website project requests from Students’ Union departments,
producing specifications and timescales for project delivery, whilst clearly communicating and
explaining technical concepts when needed.
• To ensure that our web and digital infrastructure is best practice and innovative, making the most out
of the platforms we use and suggesting and implementing improvements for the future, ensuring we
keep abreast of trends and techniques to ensure our online presence remains relevant, accessible
and responsive to user needs.
• To test web platforms across operating systems, browsers and devices to ensure correct functionality
and design, solving problems as and when they are identified.
• To manage and maintain the Students’ Union’s online shop, e-ticketing and e-commerce activity.
• To ensure the Students’ Union brand is applied consistently and in accordance with the organisation’s
brand guidelines across the Students’ Union website and online platforms.
• To write copy for the Students’ Union’s website, proofing and optimising for a range of online platforms
and devices.
• To be the lead contact for the back-end and membership management system provider (MSL:
Membership Solutions Limited) and ensure a strong and productive working relationship is
maintained.
• To manage user and administrator access to the Students’ Union’s website, CMS and MMS, whilst
regularly reviewing and monitoring web changes made by staff through the CMS.
• To manage the Students’ Union’s MSL e-POS till systems and online shop, provide technical support
and assistance to users, processing bulk refunds and troubleshooting issues.
• To maintain and develop the Students’ Union’s mobile app platforms, including the QMSU Perks
Loyalty App and QMSU Sport App, whilst managing our presence on the university app.
• To ensure the Google Business pages and Google Suite (used by Clubs & Societies) are maintained
and kept up-to-date.
• Deliver training, support and resources for Students’ Union staff on how to use the website and other
key digital systems.
• Implement Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) on site content and links to increase overall web traffic.
• To regularly review and monitor the performance and effectiveness of the Students’ Union’s website
and other online platforms by utilising reporting tools and Google GA4 to identify trends and undertake
improvements.
• To prepare and provide reports on website and app usage data, active users, page views and other
key stats, as and when instructed.
• To manage the data transfer link between the Students’ Union and university student record system
(SITS), whilst ensuring all data transfers comply with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
• To comply with all relevant legislation relating to copyright, privacy, GDPR and freedom of information.

• To support the delivery of relevant parts of the Students’ Union’s strategy and Communications &
Marketing department plan.
• Assist in the delivery of flagship Students’ Union events, such as Welcome Week, the Welcome Fair
and Elections.
• To champion and implement the Students’ Union environmental and ethical aims within the
department.
