I: LEARNING OUTCOMES:
II: TOPIC: Binomial Probability Distribution /Mean and Variance of random Variables
III RESOURCES: Statistics and Probability by Yonardo A. Gabuyo and Marjorie C. Cardenas
Statistics and Probability by Ellen S. Baccay and Rene R. Belecina
V:: INTRODUCTION:
There are so many statistical experiments that require repeated trials and their
outcomes can be categorized as success or failure. Experiments such as tossing a coin
casting, and answering multiple choice question with four or five options are some
examples of binomial experiments.
The mean of random variables,also known as the expected value, is the weighted
Average of all possible values of the random variables. The variance is a measure of
Spread or dispersion. It measures the variation of the values of a random variable
From the mean. The square root of the variance is called the standard deviation.
VI: BODY:
Recall that the combination of n repeated trials among successs or, nCx , can be solved
using the formula:
n Cx = C(n,x) = n!/(n-x)!x!
Illustrative example:
Students were asked to estimate the length ( in inches ) of a table. The errors in estimated
Values were recorded and tabulated as follows:
Error x 3 4 5 6 7
P(x) = x 0.25 0.1 0.3 0.15 0.2
Mean = E [ x . P(x)]
= 3(0.25 + 4(0.1) + 5(0.3) +6(0.15) + 7(0.2)
= 4.95
Solution:
The report of weather bureau on the forecast of the number of typhoons entering the
country ‘s area of responsibility is manifested in the following probability distribution.
P(x) = (nCx)(px)(q)n-x
The mean of discrete random variables, also known as the expected value, is the
weighted average of all possible values of the random variables.
