Statistics and Probability Module 4

SY 2022-2023:Third Quarter

Week 7-8
Date( March 13-23, ,2023)

I: LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The learners shall be able to:

 Explain the concepts of binomial experiment ;

 Understand the concept and properties of binomial probability distribution;
 Solve problems involving cumulative binomial distribution.
 Illustrate the mean and variance of discrete and continuous random variables;
 Calculate the mean and variance of discrete and continuous random variables.

II: TOPIC: Binomial Probability Distribution /Mean and Variance of random Variables
III RESOURCES: Statistics and Probability by Yonardo A. Gabuyo and Marjorie C. Cardenas
Statistics and Probability by Ellen S. Baccay and Rene R. Belecina

IV: VALUES/CHARACTER INTEGRATION

Punctuality is a great habit which surely results in success.

V:: INTRODUCTION:

There are so many statistical experiments that require repeated trials and their
outcomes can be categorized as success or failure. Experiments such as tossing a coin
casting, and answering multiple choice question with four or five options are some
examples of binomial experiments.
The mean of random variables,also known as the expected value, is the weighted
Average of all possible values of the random variables. The variance is a measure of
Spread or dispersion. It measures the variation of the values of a random variable
From the mean. The square root of the variance is called the standard deviation.

VI: BODY:

A. Characteristics of binomial experiment

a. The experiment consists of n repeated and independent trials.

b. Each trial has two possible outcomes outcomes – success and failure.

GEN-FM-018 Rev 0 Effective Date 01 Jun 2021

c. The probability of success is denoted by p and the probability of failure is denoted by
q, and p + q = 1
d. The binomial random variable x is the number of successful trials that occur among
The n repeated trials. Hence, x may take any value from 0,1,2,3,4……,n.

B. Binomial Probability Distribution

In a binomial experiment , p denotes the probability of success and q denotes the

probability of failure in a single trial. The probability distribution of a binomial
experiment is known as binomial probability distribution. The probability that there will
be exactly x successes in n trials can be computed using the binomial probability
distribution formula.

P(x) = (n C x ) = (px ) ( qn-x )

Where: n= number of repeated trials

x = number of success among trials

Recall that the combination of n repeated trials among successs or, nCx , can be solved
using the formula:

n Cx = C(n,x) = n!/(n-x)!x!

Computing mean and variance of discrete and continuous random variable.

Mean = sum of [ x . P(X) ]

Variance = sum of [ (x-u )2 . P(X) ]

Standard deviation = square root of the variance

Illustrative example:

Students were asked to estimate the length ( in inches ) of a table. The errors in estimated
Values were recorded and tabulated as follows:

Error x 3 4 5 6 7
P(x) = x 0.25 0.1 0.3 0.15 0.2

a. Find the mean

Mean = E [ x . P(x)]
= 3(0.25 + 4(0.1) + 5(0.3) +6(0.15) + 7(0.2)
= 4.95

GEN-FM-018 Rev 0 Effective Date 01 Jun 2021

b. Determine the variance and the standard deviation

Solution:

Variance = E[( x – u )2 . P(x) ]

=(3-4.95)2 (0.25) + (4-4.95)2 (0.1) + (5 – 4.95)2(0.3) + (6 –

4.95)2(0.15) + (7 – 4.95)2 (0.2)
=2.05
Standard deviation = √ σ
= √ 2.05
= 1.43

Do the following exercises.

The report of weather bureau on the forecast of the number of typhoons entering the
country ‘s area of responsibility is manifested in the following probability distribution.

No. of typhoons per month x Probability P(x = x)

0 0.15
1 0.35
2 0.30
3 0.10
4 0.10
a. What is the average number of typhoon entering the country per month?
b. What is the standard deviation?

VII: SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

GEN-FM-018 Rev 0 Effective Date 01 Jun 2021

. Binomial probability distribution is the probability distribution of any binomial
experiments. The probability of achieving exactly x successes in n trials is shown below:

P(x) = (nCx)(px)(q)n-x

The mean of discrete random variables, also known as the expected value, is the
weighted average of all possible values of the random variables.

The variance is a measure of spread or dispersion. It measures the variation of the

Values of a random variable from the mean.
