The Age of the Great Cathedrals


Byzantine Art
BYZANTINE ART
• Emperor Constantine I's made in 313 Christianity as the
official religion
• After the fall of Rome in 476, the empire was divided
into two ; the Western half (ruled from Rome) and an
Eastern half (ruled from Byzantium).
• Byzantine art developed as it developed from Roman
Empire, it was influenced by ancient Greek art.
• The style that characterized Byzantine art was almost
entirely concerned with religious expression; specifically
with the translation of church theology into artistic
terms.

French Gothic
FRENCH GOTHIC

• Originated in France around 1140.


• Remained dominant in northern Europe for
400 years and spread all over Europe.
• Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century first used the
word "Gothic" as a term of ridicule to describe
late medieval art and architecture.

Abbey Church of Saint Denis
• Here an innovative use of rib vaults
resting on pointed arches was first
introduced.
• Abbot Suger: Rebuilt the
monastery of Saint-Denis in a style
that would become known as Early
Gothic.

Most important are the structural innovations, such as cross rib vault
and flying buttresses.

Chartres Cathedral
• Built in 1134, burnt by fire in 1194,
reconstructed in High Gothic style.

• Refer to coloured glass as a material or to works created from
it.
• The term has been applied to the windows of churches,
mosques and other significant buildings.
• Although traditionally made in flat panels and used as
windows
