1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to outline the COLOR COADING & STENCLINIG, highlight quality control
procedures that will be applied to the Jafurah Upstream Pipeline & Well Tie-In Project. Color Coating and
Stenciling shall be executed in compliance with all related Saudi Aramco Engineering Standards (SAES),
Procedures, and IFC drawings.

1. RESPONSIBILITIES
Construction Department Perform the work as per the requirements of Contract
Documents, IFC Drawings, Saudi Aramco Standards, SATIP, SAIC
and Project Quality Plan.

Assign the appropriate and approved personnel for the

Painting Crew Supervisor
coating activity and monitor their performance in terms of
productivity and Quality; coordinate guidelines with the QC
inspector for proper quality performance; ensure the
implementation of approved methodology stipulated through
this and any construction method statement; implement the
corrective action when there is any violation found and the
corrective action request initiated.
Perform all Inspections as per approved SATIP to verify the
QC Coating Inspector
requirements as per specification and Aramco Standards;
prepare Inspection Reports; issue non-conformance report when
procedure or Company quality requirement is violated and
coordinate for appropriate corrective action; Discuss with QC
Supervisor on this compliance and implement preventive action
measures at construction site.
Coordinate the Inspection activities and verify the QC report for
QC Supervisor
completion and sign the document; closely monitor the
construction activities through the implemented procedures and
assigned QC inspectors; guide QC inspectors for effective way of
quality system implementation by preventive action reports;
discuss with Project Quality Manager for continuous
improvement with regards to site quality system
implementation.

2. MATERIAL STORAGE REQUIERMENT

 Paint Materials used at construction sites must be covered with appropriate canvas, tarpaulins,
or equivalent for a temporary storage period not to exceed 14 days and/or as recommended by
paint manufacturer.
 Temperature sensitive polymerization paint materials must be stored in air conditioned storage
area to maintain the temperature as recommended in the Manufacturer’s Data Sheet.

8. WEATHER CONDITION
 Painting shall not be applied when wind is strong enough to blow sand, salt spray or other foreign matter
onto the surface being painted.
 Painting shall not be applied if the substrate temperature is less than 10 ͦC or limit given in the Saudi
Aramco data sheet
 Relative humidity should be less than 90%
 Surface temperature is less than 3 ͦC above the dew point.

9. Method & Requirements

Pipes, vessels, valves, and related structural supports shall be painted a neutral background color such as
aluminum, gray, or black, which will not detract from the high visibility of the safety colors set out in this
specification. Coating Selection Shall be As Per SAES-H-001.
9.1.Lines Marking:
All lines shall be clearly marked to easily identify the following as a minimum:
a) Flow direction and service.
b) Line designation number, size, class and specification
c) Color coding as per SAES-B-067 shall be Applied as mention Table # 2.
d) Process equipment connected to the line as applicable and practical.
e) Color coding to the lines as applicable and detailed in the design drawings.
 A label in English shall be used as the primary and explicit means of identification for the contents of all above-
ground piping. A lettered label shall give the name of the contents in full or abbreviated form. Arrows shall be
used to indicate direction of flow.
 Additional details such as temperature or pressure shall be added as necessary to highlight the degree of
hazard.
 Labels shall be applied close to valves or flanges and adjacent to changes in direction, branches, and where
pipes pass over or through walls, floors, fences, or roads, and on straight pipe runs, sufficient for identification.

9.2. Fire water system:

Safety red shall be used as the color indicator for fire protection equipment and piping, as well as emergency stop
push button devices. Specific requirements are as follows:
Fire water piping: all exposed above-ground fire water piping and fittings shall be painted red.
Sprinkler and deluge piping may be painted an aluminum color. However, in the header/riser piping all valves, tees,
elbows, strainers, and their connected piping within 3 meters shall be painted red.
Fire protection equipment: fire water pumps, fire water pump control panels, portable and fixed fire protection
systems, the mounting background for fire extinguishers, Portable fire-fighting equipment, and shelters for portable
fire-fighting equipment shall be safety red.
Safety red shall be used for the background of "DANGER" and "STOP" signs, "EMERGENCY ROOM" signs and arrows,
and "EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN" signs. The Lettering shall be safety white.

Fire water system sectionalizing block valves shall be identified by their fire water system identification number.
9.3.Potable Water
 Safety blue shall be used as the color indicator for potable water (sweet water and domestic raw water).
Specific requirements: Above-ground potable water piping in plant areas shall be painted blue.

9.4.Physical Hazardous Locations (i.e. Handrails, Ladders Foundations, Bollard,Guard post)

 Safety yellow or yellow and black shall be the color indicator for physical and
 radioactive hazards.
 Physical hazards such as stumbling and tripping hazards shall be painted safety yellow.
 Where additional caution is required, such as concrete supports at the base of stairways or ladders, passageway
pinch points, unguarded edges, tripping hazards, barricades including access road overpass railings in plant
areas, and obstructions that present bump hazards, safety yellow-and-black stripes shall be used. The stripes
shall be 100mm wide.
"Warning" and "Caution" signs shall have black lettering on safety yellow background.

9.5.Letter & Marking for Plant (General) Piping

 The size of the label letters shall not be less than 13 mm, nor greater than 89 mm, varying in size depending on
the outside diameter of the pipe as mentioned table no.1 & table B1.
 For pipes 52 mm and smaller, use stamped metal tags or signs clamped to the pipe.
 For piping 52 mm and smaller running between equipment where the total length is less than 15 meters, no
labeling is necessary. For piping on pipe racks, labels shall be oriented so as to be visible from grade level as well
as from any nearby platform.
 Unless otherwise specified herein, the color of the label letters shall be safety black or white, whichever
provides the greater contrast to the background color.
 Markings should be as close as possible to the points of product transfer.
 Background colors shall be indicated by a 300 mm wide band per Table 2.
 The identifying color shall be indicated by a 50/100 mm wide stripe over the band per Table 2.
 spaced 25 mm apart when two stripes are applied.
 The color-coding bands shall be placed at 10 m intervals.
 The background color band represents groups of materials with similar volatility.The identifying color stripe
identifies the specific material as listed in Table 2 below.
 Primary Language is English and Giving Clear Identification of the Content.
 Content on the lettered label shall be in full or abbreviated form, any abbreviation to be clear agreed by
Proponent.
 Arrow Shall be used for Flow Direction.
 Line Size (Diameter) Shall be Included.
 Line Number from the Line List.
 Line Class.
 Additional Details Such as Temperature or Pressure to Highlight the Degree of Hazard to be Added on
Proponents request.

9.6. Lifting Equipment

 Lifting equipment and devices such as davits, monorails, and lifting beams (whether permanent or used
only for construction) shall be painted safety yellow.
 All lifting equipment and devices shall be clearly marked with the rated capacity of the equipment in Arabic
and English in metric tons to meet SAES-M-008. All lifting equipment and devices shall be safety yellow to
meet the as above mentioned Physical
9.7. Tanks & Equipment
Tankage and equipment shall be identified in Arabic and English as follows:
 Letters shall be at least 150 mm high.
 Labels or signs shall be painted at 90-degree intervals around the tanks or equipment at an elevation (line-
of-sight and visible from outside the diked area).
 Letters shall be a size easy to read from normal approach directions and distance Refer to ANSI Z535.2.

Tanks logo type and identification shall be painted as follow:
1. Labels or sign shall be painted at 90-degree intervals around the tanks and at a visible elevation. Letters shall be
a size easy to read from normal approach direction and distance.
2. Equipment’s color mentioned in above table are base color equipment. Auxiliary piping, supporting structure,
covers, enclosures, instrument, electrical equipment, ETC, must comply with its material color identification.
3. The connectors and color coding for utility stations shall be in accordance to SAES-L- 310 and SAES-L-350.
