Design of Laced Column

Design of column:

Load P = 686 KN X10^3 = 686000 N

Length = 6.10 m
Effective Length L = = 6.10 m

Assume design strength = 125 MPa

Required area = 686000/125 = 5488 mm2

Select two ISMB 500 at 852.5 N/m

The relevant properties of ISMB 500
Width of flange = 180 mm
A = 11074 mm2
rzz = 202.1
ryy = 35.2
Izz = 452183000 mm4
Iyy = 13696000 mm4
Area available = 2X11074 = 22148 mm2
First check the safety of the section and then Workout the required spacing between the two channels

L/rzz= 6.1X1000/202.1 = 30.183

The L/r of the built-up column should be taken as

1.05 x (L/rzz) = 1.05 x30.183
= 31.69
For L/rzz = 31.69 and fy= 250 MPa

using table 9c of the code

fcd = 209.00 MPa

Load carrying capacity= Ae X fcd= 22148X209/1000

= 4629 KN > 686 KN

Hence the column is safe

Let us provide two beam and connect them by lacing and denote S as the spacing between two beam

Spacing of beams:
2Izz = 2 [Iyy + A(S/2)^2]

S= 397.397

Let us keep the beams at a spacing of 397.397

Lacing system
Using single lacing system with the inclination of lacing bar =
45 Degree (gauge length for a 250 mm flange)= 100 mm

Spacing of lacing bars, Lo= (2x(397.397+100+100)cot 45)

= 1195 mm
Lo /ryy should be < 0.7 x L/r of whole column

L/r = 31.69
.7 L/r = 22.18
Lo /ryy = 33.94
33.94<22.18

Hence Unsafe

Maximum shear= 2.5x686x1000/100 = 17150 N

Transverse shear in each panel
(V/N)= 17150/2 = 8575 N

Compressive force in the lacing bar=

=(V/N) cosec 45 =
8575 x 1.414 = 12125 N

Spacing of the beam= 397.40 mm

Compressive force in the lacing = 12125 N

Effective length of lacing (welded)= 0.7 x397.397 x cosec 45̊

= 393.34
Minimum thickness of lacing = 1/40 x(397.397x cosec 45̊ )
= 14 mm
Provide 110x 110 lacing angle 15 mm thick

Minimum radius of gyration ,r = t/√12= 15/√12 = 4.33

L/r = 393.344/4.33 = 90.842

90.842 <145
Hence the L/r ratio is Ok
For L/r= 90.842 and fy = 250 MPa
Using table 9c of the code
fcd= 116.8 N/mm2
Capacity of lacing bar = 116.8x110x15 = 192720 N
192720>12125.05
Hence, the lacing bar is Safe

Overlap of lacing flat = 100

4x15 = 60
100>60

Hence, the lacing flat is safe

Connection:
Thickness of flange of ISMB 500 = 15 mm
Minimum size of weld = 5 mm (Table 21 of code)
Strength of weld/unit length= 5x.7x410/1.5x√3
= 552 N/mm

Required length of weld = 12125.05/552.332 = 21.952

Adding extra length for ends,the weld length to be provided
= 21.952+ 2(2 x5) = 42 mm
Provide 100 mm weld length at both ends.
Tie plate:
Effective depth of plate = S+ 2 x Cyy
= 397.397+2x0
397 mm
= 397>2x180
Overall depth of plate= 397+60
= 457 mm
Let,length of tie plate = 397.397+ 2x180 = 757.00 mm
Thickness of tie plate = 1/50(397.397+2x100 12.00 mm
Provide a 12 mm plate to accommodate a 5 weld.

757x457x12
Provide a tie plate of 757x460x12 size and connect it with 5 mm welds
channel section
Design of column having channel section:

Load P = 67.56 KN X10^3 = 67558 N

Length = 8.85 m
Effective Length L = = 8.85 m

Assume design strength = 125 MPa

Required area = 67558/125 = 540 mm2

Select two ISMC 300 H at 351.2

The relevant properties of ISMC 300 H
Width of flange = 90 mm
A = 4564 mm2
rzz = 118.1
ryy = 26.1
Izz = 63626000 mm4
Cyy = 23.6 mm
Iyy = 3108000 mm4
Area available = 2X4564 = 9128 mm2
First check the safety of the section and then Workout the required spacing between the two channels

L/rzz= 8.85X1000/118.1 = 74.936

The L/r of the battened column should be taken as

1.1 x (L/rzz) = 1.05 x74.936
= 78.68
For L/rzz = 78.68 and fy= 250 MPa

using table 9c of the code

fcd = 142.00 MPa

Load carrying capacity= Ae X fcd= 9128X142/1000

= 1296 KN > 68 KN

Hence the column is safe

Let us provide two channel section and connect them face to face by lacing and denote S as the spacing between two beam

Spacing of beams:
2Izz = 2 [Iyy + A((S/2)-Cyy)^2]

S= 277.32

Let us keep the channel section at a spacing of 277 mm

Design of batten
Spacing of battens C/ryy should be less than 0.7*slenderness ratio of the column as a whole:
Spacing of batten = l'/rzz>50
OR l'/rzz> 0.7 * (l/r) *ryy 55.07796

l'= 1437.53 mm
provide battens at a spacing of = 1400 mm

Size of end batten

Thickness of the batten = (1/50)*spacing of Angle bars 3.664

USE BATTEN THICKNESS OF : 6 mm

Overall depth of the batten = Effective 183.2
depth of the beam:
USE A BATTEN DEPTH OF : 200 mm
Minimum overlap = 4x6=24 mm

Provide 50 mm overlap for welding with channel

Total length = 136+2 x 50 = 236 mm (say 240mm) provide

:. Provide 200 x 240 x 6 mm end buttons
Size of intermediate batten
overall depth = 3/4*183.2= 137.4
USE A BATTEN DEPTH OF : 140 mm

Adopt thickness of batten same as above e.g. 6 mm

Length of batten also adopted as above e.g. 240 mm
:. Provide 140 x 240 x 6 mm intermediate battens
