2) By means of equations give the relation between:

a) Energy of photon and wavelength

b) Wavenumber and frequency

3) Fill in the blanks:

a) If you double the frequency of electromagnetic radiation, you

the energy.

b) If you double the wavelength, you the energy.

4) Give reason for: Microwaves are safe, while Gamma-rays are not.
5) Choose the correct answer:

1) UV region of the spectrum is in the range of:

a) 100-200 nm
b) 400-800 nm
c) 200-400 nm
d) 400 -600 nm

2) UV-Vis. Spectroscopy of organic compounds is usually concerned with which of

the following electronic transition(s)?
a) σ-σ*

b) n-π* and π-π*

c) n-σ*

d) All these options are correct

6) Define the following terms: Chromophore and auxochrome.

7) What types of electrons in a molecule are generally involved in theabsorption of

UV or visible region?

8) What are the most frequent electronic transitions during absorption of

electromagnetic radiation? Which results in more intense
absorption?
9) Which of the following pairs of compounds is likely to absorb radiation at
the longer wavelength and with great intensity?

10) Calculate the frequency (Hz), wavenumber (cm–1), and energy of visible light
with a wavelength of 562 nm.

11) How much energy (in kilojoules) is carried by photon of red lightwith λ = 650
nm?

12) Define the following terms: A (% 1, 1cm), molar absorptivity, Lambert's law.

13) In the form of equations, mention the relationship between:

a- Absorbance and transmittance.
b- A (% 1 ,1cm) and molar absorptivity (epsilon).
14) Convert the following absorbance data into percent transmittance:

a- 0.278 b- 1.499 c- 0.039

15) Calculate the concentration of methyltesterone in an ethanolic solution of

which the absorbance in a 1-cm cell at 241 nm was found to be 0.890, the A (%
1, 1cm) of methyltestosterone is 540 at 241 nm.

16) A sample in a 1-cm cell is determined with a spectrophotometer to transmit

80% light at a certain wavelength. If the absorptivity of this substance at this
wavelength is 2.00, what is the concentration of the substance?

17) The complex formed between Copper and 1,10-phenanthroline has a molar
absorptivity of 7000 L mol-1 cm-1 at 435 nm. Calculate;
a- A of 8.50 x 10-5 M solution of the complex when measured in 1-cm cell at 435 nm.
b- percent transmittance of the solution in part (a).
18) The absorbance of a 2.31 x10–5 M solution of a compound is 0.822 at a
