Action Research: Making Easy

“…find a way of bridging the traditional divide between educational

theory and professional practice.” –Whitehead, Mcniff (1988)
What is Action Research?
• Action research is a process in which participants examine their own
educational practice, systematically and carefully, using the
techniques of research.

Action -> Change

Research -> Understand
• Teaching -> improvement of teaching practice.
• To generate improvements in schools.
• To reflect or assess the teaching.
What is Action Research?
• To explore and test new ideas, methods, and materials.
• To assess how effective new teaching approaches.
• To share feedbacks with fellow teachers.
• To appraise teaching practices.
What is Action Research?
Action research is systematic inquiry done by teachers (or
other individuals in an educational setting) to gather
information about, and subsequently improve, the ways their
particular educational setting operates, how they teach, and
how well their students learn(Mills, 2000).
Why Action Research?
• It is participatory.
• It is “from within” and not from an external “Expert’s eye”
• Very real.

1.) Problem Tree Analysis (Negative)
• Problem tree analysis (also called Situational analysis or just Problem
analysis) helps to find solutions by mapping out the anatomy of cause
and effect around an issue in a similar way to a Mind map, but with
more structure.

• Does this represent the reality?

• What are the causes and effect of this problem?
• What are the easiest or difficult to address?

5.) Literature Scanning
• Finding the Context and the Gap
• Does the problem have not been answered by any other research?
