LS3 Mathematical and Problem-Solving Skills: DIRECT VARIATION
Let’s Study and Analyze
Variation is a function that relates one variable to another variable. There are four main
types of variation. In this lesson, however, we will be focusing on Direct Variation.
The knowledge and skills that you will gain in this lesson will help you solve real-life problems
involving Direct Variation.
2. Will the number of rice seedlings planted increase if the farmer spends more days
planting? ____________________________
3. If he had planted 4,000 rice seedlings, how many days did the farmer work?___________
Direct Variation
In a Direct Variation, what happens to the values of one variable also happens to the
values of the other variable. In other words, as one variable increases, the other variable also
increases; as one variable decreases, the other variable also decreases.
If 𝑦 is the dependent variable and 𝑥 is the independent variable, the following statements
are usually used to illustrate Direct Variation:
“𝑦 varies directly as 𝑥”
“𝑦 is proportional to 𝑥” and
“𝑦 is directly proportional to 𝑥”
The above statements may be written mathematically as 𝑦=𝑘𝑥, where 𝑘 is the Constant of
Variation. The constant of variation can be solved using the formula: 𝑘= 𝑦𝑥
Whenever a situation produces pairs of numbers in which the ratio is constant, then there is
Direct Variation.
Illustrative Example:
The table below shows the salary (𝑠) earned by a tutor and the number of hours (ℎ) tutoring:
Hours (h) 2 5 8 10
Salary (s) in P 1000 2500 4000 5000
Since the number the salary of a tutor is directly proportional to the number of hours
tutoring, we can express the situation in mathematical equation as 𝑠=𝑘ℎ.
Using the ordered pair (2,1000), substitute it to the equation and solve for the value of 𝑘:
1000=𝑘(2)
2𝑘=1000
2𝑘=1000
2 2
𝑘=500
If 𝑘=500, then we can write the equation of variation as 𝑠=500ℎ.

LS3 Mathematical and Problem-Solving Skills: DIRECT VARIATION
Using the equation of variation, we can now get the amount of salary of a tutor for a given
number of hours or vice versa.
Suppose you are asked to find the amount of salary of a tutor if he/she teaches for 10 hours:
𝑠=5000
Therefore, the tutor will earn P5,000.00 in 10 hours.
Direct Variation may also be presented in a graph. The graph of direct variation is a line that
rises from left to right.
