Scenario: The Struggling Manager – Communication Breakdown

Background: Mark, a project manager at a leading consulting firm, has always

been known for his technical expertise and deep knowledge of the industry.
However, his team has been facing several challenges lately, and upper
management is growing concerned about the department’s performance.
Scenario: Mark is responsible for leading a critical meeting with his team to
discuss an upcoming project proposal. During the meeting, he speaks quickly, often
rushing through his points, making it hard for the team to follow. He avoids eye
contact and stands rigidly in front of the projector, reading directly from the slides
without adding any explanation or context. When team members ask questions,
Mark either cuts them off or gives vague responses, leaving many confused and
hesitant to ask more questions.
At one point, Mark becomes visibly flustered when asked to clarify an important
project detail. His voice begins to waver, and he starts fidgeting with his notes,
which only worsens the tension in the room. As the meeting progresses, it becomes
clear that his lack of clarity and inability to communicate effectively are causing
frustration among the team.
After the meeting, several team members privately express concerns to each other.
They feel that they are not getting the information they need, and some have even
started doubting the direction of the project. Morale is beginning to drop, and
productivity has suffered as a result of the communication breakdown.
Questions for Discussion:
1. What problems can you identify in how Mark leads and communicates in the
meeting?
2. How might Mark’s communication style affect team motivation and
engagement?
3. What are some ways Mark could improve his delivery and public speaking
skills to make his meetings more effective?
4. How could better communication skills help Mark convey project details
more clearly and avoid confusion?
5. How can Mark improve his interactions with his team to ensure open
communication and better collaboration
