O.S (Operating System)

The operating system is an interface between the user and the computer hardware. The
computer's hardware cannot understand the human-readable language as it works on binaries
i.e. 0's and 1's. Also, it is very tough for humans to understand the binary language, in such cases
we need an interface that can translate human language to hardware and vice-versa for effective
communication.

- O.S Example
 Windows O.S
 Client O.S
# Windows XP/ Windows7/Windows8/Windows 10/11
Windows 10 October 14, 2025
 Server O.S
# Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019/2022

Type of O.S(Operating System)

Single Tasking Operating System with Single User

In this operating system, only one user can log into the system and perform only one task at a
time.

E.g.: MS-DOS

Multi-Tasking Operating System with Single User

This type of O/S supports only one user to log into the system but a user can perform multiple
tasks at a time, browsing the internet while playing songs, etc.

Example.: Windows 10 /1 1.

Multi-Tasking Operating System with Multi-Users

This type of O/S allows multiple users to log into the system and each user can perform various
tasks simultaneously. Multiple users can log in to the system and share the resources of the
system at the same time.

E.g.: UNIX, LINUX, etc.

E.g.: Windows Server.

History of Unix

Unix/Linux

Before the development of the Unix operating system at AT&T Bell Labs, a software team led
by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and Rudd Canaday worked on the MULTICS project.
MULTICS stands for Multiplexed Information and Computing Service. This project aimed to
allow multiple users to access the same data concurrently.

Initially, MULTICS was developed for only two users. The UNICS operating system was
developed for hundreds of users. UNICS stands for Uniplexed Information and Computing
Service. Initially written in assembly language in 1973, it was later rewritten in 'C' language
and named UNIX.
