Q.4 (a) A 1.2m-long rod has a circular cross-section and carries an axial
compressive load of 80 kN as shown in the Figure Q.4(a). If the axial
stress in the column is limited to 10 N/mm2, calculate
(i) the minimum allowable diameter of the upper portion of the rod;
(2 marks)
(ii) the shortening of the rod due to this load; and (4 marks)
(iii) the change in the diameter of each portion of the rod. (6 marks)

Q.4 (b) A 2m-long solid steel shaft of diameter 120 mm is fix-supported at A and the
other end B is welded to a 1m-long alloy circular hollow section with same
outer diameter of the steel shaft and inner diameter of 90 mm as shown in
Figure Q.4(b). A torque of 80 kNm is applied at B and a torque of 60 kNm
is applied at free end C as shown in the figure. Using Gsteel = 90 GPa and
Galloy = 70 GPa,
(i) draw the torsional moment diagram for the whole member;

(ii) calculate the maximum torsional shear stresses induced in both steel
and alloy sections of the shaft; and (6 marks)

terms of w kN/m. Hence, draw the bending moment diagram. (6 marks)
(c) If the maximum permissible bending stress of this beam is 250 N/mm2,
determine the uniformly distributed load of w kN/m that can be carried by
the beam. (5 marks)
(d) Sketch the bending stress distribution across the section of the beam under
the maximum bending stress. (4 marks)
