TO DETERMINE THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF SPECIMENS.

Scope and Significance:

The test method covers determination of compressive strength of specimens. It consists of
applying a compressive axial load to specimens at a rate which is within a prescribed range
until failure occurs. The compressive strength is calculated by dividing the maximum load
attained during the test by the cross sectional area of the specimen.

Apparatus:
• Weights and weighing device
• Tools and containers for mixing
• Tamper (square in cross section)
• Testing machine
• Cubes
• Bricks
• Cylinder

Procedure for cube:

1. Remove the specimen from the water after specified curing time and wipe out excess water
from the surface.
2. Take the dimension of the specimen to the nearest 0.2m.
3. Clean the bearing surface of the testing machine.
4. Place the specimen in the machine in such a manner that the load shall be applied to the
opposite sides of the cube cast.
5. Align the specimen centrally on the base plate of the machine.
6. Rotate the movable portion gently by hand so that it touches the top surface of the
specimen.
7. Apply the load gradually without shock and continuously till the specimen fails.
8. Record the maximum load and note any unusual features in the type of failure.

Procedure for brick:

1. Place the specimen with flat face s horizontal and gypsum filled face facing upwards
between plates of the testing machine.
2. Apply load axially at a uniform rate of 14 N/mm2 (140 kg/cm2) per minute till failure
occurs and note maximum load at failure.
3. The load at failure is maximum load at which the specimen fails to produce any further
increase in the indicator reading on the testing machine.

Procedure for cylinder:

1. Place the cylinder on the bottom platen and align it carefully with the compression
machine's loading axis.
2. Zero the loading indicator of the compression machine.
3. Manually tilt the spherically seated upper platen to align it with the top surface of the
cylinder.
4. Apply the load.
5. Continue loading the specimen until the load indicator drops off steadily and the cylinder
is visibly fractured.
6. Record the maximum load and calculate the compressive strength.
