Comparing Ratios
Think and Understand
We can write ratios in fraction form and then compare them. To compare two term
ratios, write the ratios in faction form then cross multiply, just like comparing fractions.
For example:
1. 2 : 3 and 5 : 7

Cross multiply and

compare the products.
2:3 = 5:7 =
2×7 < 5×3
14 < 15 Since 14 is less than 15,
then 2 : 3 < 5 : 7
<
Notice the first pair of terms that we multiply are the extremes and the second
pair of terms that we multiply are the means. Therefore, we can also compare two
term ratios if we multiply the extremes and then multiply the means. Compare the
products afterwards.
First Product (extremes) Second Product (extremes)
2 × 7 = 14 3 × 5 = 15
2:3 5:7

Other examples:

1. 2 : 3 and 14 : 21 2. 8 : 12 and 4 : 7

____ ____
2 × 21 ____ 14 × 3 8 × 7 ____ 4 × 12
42 ____ 42 56 ____ 48
Therefore 2 : 3 and 14 : 21 is equal Therefore 8 : 12 is greater than
or 2 : 3 = 14 : 21. 4 : 7 or 8 : 12 > 4 :7.
3. 5 : 9 and 7 : 8 4. 5 : 7 and 15 : 21

____ ____
5 × 8 ____ 7×9 5 × 21 ____ 15 × 7
40 ____ 63 105 ____ 105
Therefore 5 : 9 is less than Therefore 5 : 7 is equal to 15 : 21 or
7 : 8 or 5 : 9 < 7 : 8. 5 : 7 = 15 : 21.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Solve to compare each ratio. Write the symbol >, <, or = on each blank.

1. 3 : 4 ______ 5 : 8
4. 12 : 15 ______ 4 : 5

2. 2 : 6 ______ 7 : 12
5. 9 : 10 ______ 7 : 8

3. 8 : 11 ______ 6 : 10
6. 4.3 : 9 ______ 6 : 7.5
