5. SPINNING AND PROCESS
Spinning, in textiles, process of drawing out fibres from a mass and twisting them together to form
a continuous thread or yarn
Industrial revolution bought dynamic changes in our daily lives and textile manufacturing process is
no more an exception. Spinning mills are significant for textile industries as they transfigure fibre into
yarn and yarn into fabric.
Few cotton mills generally conduct the textile manufacturing process by generating fibers from
cotton bales supplied and processing it ahead to attain fabrics. Spinning process is an initial step to
produce textile layout such as garments, fabric, home textile and so on.
People used to convert fibers into yarn i.e. the spinning process by hand before a couple of decades
which has now been mostly replaced by advanced technology of mechanical spinning carried in textile
mills. Let’s have a view on spinning process in textile manufacturing.
Industrial revolution supplied developments to production units making their process easy in
controlling the process by spinning machinery. In this machine process various levels are added to
convert fiber (cotton/wool) into yarn to process it further for textile products.

6.1 BLOW ROOM
Blow room is the segment where the delivered compacted bales are turned into an even lap of a certain
length. And this is done by opening them into small tufts first. Then, these fibres are cleaned with the
help of beaters & mixed homogeneously, or they are blended with different grades of bale. These are
the operations that are usually carried out in a blow room section.
Besides, this section has a cleaning accuracy of 40-70%. In ring spinning, it is responsible for
contributing up to 10% of the total manufacturing costs. Well, the two most widely used brands of blow
room machinery are from Reiter, Switzerland, and Tritschler, Germany.
From the above section, you may have already got an idea about its functions. Anyway, these are the
major ones –

6.2 CARDING
“Card is the heart of the spinning mill” and “well carded is half spun” are two proverbs of the
experts. The main object of the carding process is to individualize the fibers and convert the fibres into a
strand called the sliver. Carding is one of the most important operations in the “spinning process” as it
directly determines the final features of the yarn. High production in carding to economies the process leads
to reduction in yarn quality. Higher the production, the more sensitive becomes the carding operation and
greater danger of a negative influence on quality. The technological changes that has taken place in the
process of carding is remarkable. Latest machines achieve the production rate of 60-100Kgs/hr, which used
to be 5-10Kgs/hr, up to 1970.
The carding is the first machine in the spinning preparation that delivers a sliver. The main
objectives of the card are:
Reduction of neps.
Fiber blending.
Fiber orientation.
Sliver formation.

6.3 BREAKER DRAWING
Draw frame is a very critical machine in the spinning process. It's influence on quality, especially on
evenness is very big. If Draw frame is not set properly, it will also result in drop in yarn strength and yarn
elongation at break. The faults in the sliver that come out of Draw frame cannot be corrected. It will pass
into the yarn.
In whole spinning process we always reduce the linear density of raw material. In carded sliver variation
is more in density, so to get uniform sliver, this process of drawing the sliver has to be carried out. Here the
drafting and doubling occurs together sliver mixing is also done in this process, hence it is of great
importance to carry out the process of DRAWING.
OBJECTIVE:
1) To parallelize and straighten the fibers in card sliver along the sliver axis.
4) To remove the leading and trailing hooks through the breaker and finisher draw frame.
5) To lay the sliver in can with uniform coils forming a clear center hole.
9
6.4 LAP FORMER
In the spinning section of the textile industry, a lap former is a must-have machine for creating lap. It’s
utilized once the blow room operation is finished. Lap Former Machines are used in spinning for lapping
cotton and generating compact laps from pulled sliver to feed the comber machine.
A 30-inch-wide lap is coiled onto a bobbin with cotton wool. Because it is used for lapping yarn by
lapping, the lap former machine is not employed in the carded yarn process.
10
6.5 Comber
Cotton fibers have a distribution of fiber lengths ranging from the longest fiber group to the shortest
fiber group. Short fibers of length less than 12.5 mm do not contribute to the mechanical properties of the
yarn but increase yarn hairiness, which adversely affects the yarn and fabric appearance. The combing
process aims to remove short fibers from the group of fibers. The main objective of combing process is to
remove short fibers and to improve fiber orientation. Combing is a key process that makes the difference
between an ordinary yarn and a quality yarn.
The primary function of a comber are three: to remove fiber hooks and parallelize the fibers, to bring
about fiber-to-fiber separation, and to remove short fibers. Of these short fibers or noils removal has to be
done through removal of waste. The comber waste also contains a large number of neps and some foreign
matter particles. Combing, therefore, results in a considerable reduction of nep content and in some cleaning
of cotton also.
11
6.6 simplex
In yarn manufacturing system, simplex frame is situated after the comber. The sliver which is
produced from the comber that is thicker and it is not suitable to feed into the ring frame directly to produce
yarn. For this reason, drawn sliver is treated before entering into the ring frame. The commonly used
simplex machine for cotton is flyer frame or speed frame. There are three basic steps in the operation of the
roving frame – drafting, twisting and winding. These three basic steps are exactly the same as the basic
steps required in spinning.
The machine where the sliver is subjected to one or more attenuating process and the attenuated
sliver receives a small amount of twist and is then wound on bobbins suitable for creeling at next process.
In this process drawn sliver is input and fine roving is output. The roving is feed into ring frame for
yarn production. It is noted that, simplex is essential for the production of cotton yarn in case of ring
spinning by ring spinning system.
a) Fly frame.
b) Roving frame.
c) Speed frame.

6.7 Auto corner
The main objective of spinning is to produce yarn from fiber in textile industry, a bigger package
of yarn is formed at the end with winding machine. It will ultimately lead to loss in production if efficiency
or speed of cheese & cone forming process (i.e winding) is slower. Thus autocorner needs to run efficiently
to fulfill all the requirements.
There are some responsible causes that lower the efficiency of autorconer machine if we eliminate
those causes no such problem will occur. Those problem cannot be recover by technical or non-technical
adjustments
During the internship I conducted study on Autocorner and found an effective way to improve the
efficiency by using simple device with the lowest possible cost and effective working action. The efficiency
of these device is calculated under the supervision of my guide at reputed textile mill in India and the study
found to be successful
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
Several companies are facing problem of stoppages on Ring frame machine due to lower production
of Autoconer machine. The Ring frame can run effectively if autoconer works efficiently and give good
production rate. So with a view to improve problem of efficiency I came up with project idea of “TO
IMPROVE EFFICIENCY OF AUTO CONER MACHINE” which is linked with ring frame.
• The worker should engage toward red light at the earliest and pay attention to the machine.
