EEE 2302: CIRCUIT AND NETWORK THEORY II

DUE DATE: AUGUST, 2018 TIME: 2 HRS

INSTRUCTIONS: This examination paper contains five questions. Answer Question ONE
and any other TWO Questions. Question ONE carries 30 Marks and ALL the other
questions carry 20 Marks each.

QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

(a) State the frequency response analysis as applied to Circuit Network Theory.

(b) What are the advantages of circuit analysis in frequency domain? [2 Marks]
(c) Given the circuit below, find the voltage 𝑣0 (𝑡). (Hint: Use Laplace Transform)

(d) For the simple low pass filter circuit given in Figure 1.2 below
i. Find the transfer function of the continuous-time lowpass filer. [3 Marks]
ii. Implement this filter as a digital filter using bilinear transform. [3 Marks]

(e) Determine the range of frequencies that will be passed by a series RLC bandpass filter
with 𝑅 = 10 Ω, 𝐿 = 25 𝑚𝐻, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 = 0.4 µ𝐹. Find the quality factor. [6 Marks]

(f) For the circuit given in figure 1.3 (𝑅 = 2 𝑘𝛺, 𝐿 = 2 𝐻, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 = 2 𝜇𝐹)
i. Determine what type of filter it is [3 Marks]
ii. Calculate the corner or cut-off frequency. [2 Marks]

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

(a) State the advantages active filters offer over passive RLC filters. [3 Marks]
(b) Design an RL lowpass filter that uses a 40-mH coil and has a cutoff frequency of 5
kHz. [6 Marks]
(c) Solve the ODE below using Laplace Transform given that at 𝑡 = 0, 𝑥 = 5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥’ = 7

𝐿 = 0.01 𝐻 using Laplace transforms. [5 Marks]

(a) What values of 𝐾 and 𝐾 will scale a 4-mH inductor and a 20-µF capacitor to 1 H
𝑚 𝑓
and 2 F respectively? [6 Marks]
(b) The magnitude plot in Figure 3.1 represents the transfer function of a preamplifier.
Find H(s). [6 Marks]

(a) With help of appropriate circuit diadgrams and their respective transfer functions,
explain the following types of passive RLC filters:
i. Bandpass filter [2 Marks]
ii. Bandstop filter [2 Marks]
(b) Starting from basics, verify that

(b) The resonant or tuner circuit of an AM radio is portrayed in Figure 5.1. Given that 𝐿 = 1µ𝐻,

AM band to another? (Hint: The frequency range for AM broadcasting is 540 to 1600 𝑘𝐻𝑧).
