Competency: Uses knowledge of text structure to glean the
information he/she needs. (CS_EN11/12A-EAPP-Iac-4)
Learner’s Tasks
Lesson Overview
Writers need structure in writing to come up with an organized essay. Good writing
structure helps the writer stay focused on the flow of ideas in his essay. When a writer
follows a particular structure, he/she will surely be able to communicate his/her
message in a manner that is understandable to his/her readers.
Structure refers to the order of ideas. As a writer you should ensure that the progression
of your writing should feel smooth with similar points linked together. Structuring your
work is a key aspect of good academic writing, ensuring that related sections are
linked together and that the ideas and arguments progress in a logical and orderly
manner.
Example: Jack and Jill ran up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke
his crown and Jill came tumbling after.
Cause-Effect
This structure shows how one or more causes led to one or more effects. Many texts
do not include just one cause leading to one effect, sometimes it discusses several
causes and several effects.

Example: The dodo bird used to roam in large flocks across America. Interestingly, the
dodo wasn’t startled by gun shot. Because of this, frontiersmen would kill entire flocks
in one sitting. Unable to sustain these attacks, the dodo was hunted to extinction.
Problem-Solution
This text structure presents a problem and shows how it can be (or has been) solved.
The key difference between cause-effect and problem-solution is that the latter
always presents a solution while the former does not.
Example: Thousands of people die each year in car accidents involving drugs or
alcohol. Lives could be saved if our town adopts a free public taxi service. By
providing such a service, we could prevent intoxicated drivers from endangering
themselves or others.
Compare-Contrast
This type of text examines the similarities and differences between two or more people,
events, concepts, ideas, etc.
Example: Linux and Windows are both operating systems. Computers use them to run
programs. Linux is totally free and open source, so users can improve or otherwise
modify the source code. Windows is proprietary, so it costs money to use, and users
are prohibited from altering the source code.
Example: When you walk into my bedroom, there is a window facing you. To the right
of that is a dresser and television and on the other side of the window is my bed.
As it turns out, a knowledge of text structure can be very helpful for readers. When
readers do not have a strong knowledge of the topic of a text, they depend more on
the structure (Cataldo & Oakhill). A well-written text guides the reader through the
content.
Research shows that efficient searchers use the structure of the text to help them find
specific information, as well as make and interpret arguments. The structure of a text
helps readers find answers to questions too.
Text structure is also an important component to summarizing. When readers
summarize, they need to reflect on the text structure in the summary.
