Many people think that seeing certain birds is bad luck or even a sign that they are going to die soon.
For instance, both crows and ravens are linked to war and death all over the world. In the past, people
thought that crows and ravens were friends of the war gods or signs that the gods were on their way. This
idea changed in the end. People thought that crows, in particular, could bring bad luck or even help people
get to the future. No one should have seen a single crow or raven flying overhead, because that meant
something bad was going to happen soon.
Interestingly, the raven is thought to bring good luck to the crown of England, even though it might be
bad luck for individuals. It was so important that a "raven master" was still a real government job in London.
He takes care of the ravens there and clips their wings so they can never fly too far from where the British
government is based. This way, bad luck will never be able to take the kingdom.
The swallow is another bird that is thought to be able to tell people what will happen in their lives. If
you see a swallow in the right way and at the right time, it could mean either good or bad luck. Christians
first linked the swallow to the death of Jesus Christ, possibly because of its reddish-brown breast. So, people
thought it meant death when they saw a swallow fly through their house. But over time, farmers started to
think that swallows were lucky signs. If swallows live in a barn, that barn will be lucky next year. A farmer
should also avoid killing a bird because that would ruin any good luck they were having.
A lot of people think these beliefs are just old wives' tales, but there is some evidence to back them up.
Crows and ravens, for example, show up after fights because they are scavengers. So, seeing a lot of crows
and ravens could mean that there is war in the area. Along with that, swallows eat bugs that can make cattle
sick. In this way, a farmer with lots of swallows in his barn may have healthy animals. This means that the
next time you want to laugh at an old wives' tale, you might want to check to see if it's true first.
