Recap

In the previous class, we have discussed

about
• Extraction of metal
• Production of Pig Iron in Blast Furnace and
Composition of Pig Iron
• Production of Wrought Iron in Puddling Furnace
and Composition of Wrought Iron

9M404.24 2
Objectives

On completion of this topic the student will

able to know
• What is Cast Iron?
• Manufacture of cast iron in cupola Furnace
• Cupola Furnace constructional details
• Raw materials
• Operation of cupola furnace to produce Cast Iron

Flow chart

9M404.24 4
Constructional Details of Cupola Furnace
• Cylindrical shell lined with fire bricks

• Shell diameter 0.9m to 2m, height 4 to 5 times

diameter

• On bottom 100 to 150mm thick sand bed with

slope

• Dry wood placed on sand bed

• Coke charged on bed 0.75m above tuyeres

9M404.24 5
Charge

• Consists of metal(75% pig iron +25% steel scrap), coke,

lime stone
• Above materials arranged as alternate layers on burning
coke bed
• 1 tonne of coke,10 tonnes of metal , 0.2 tonnes of lime

Operation Of Cupola Furnace

• Coke first lit at bottom

• Cupola charged from charging door upto bottom of

door

• Alternate layers of metal (75%pig iron +25% steel

scrap), coke, lime stone

• Air blast put on through tuyers

9M404.24 9
Heating Zones

• Preheating zone

• Melting zone

• Superheating zone

Reactions
• Limestone melts and forms flux

• Flux protects metal from excessive oxidation

• Lime fuses, forms slag with coke ash

• Hot gases rise through furnace and melts the iron

• 1% Si, 1.5%Mn oxidised, phosphorous remains

unchanged
• Molten iron and slag taken out in separate notches and
molten iron tapped into laddle and cast into moulds
9M404.24 12
Composition of Cast Iron

• Fe = 92 – 96 %
• C = 2.5 – 3.75 %
• Si = 1.0 – 2.5 %
• Mn = 0.4 – 1.0 %
• S = 0.06 – 0.12 %
• P = 0.1 – 1.0 %
