ASSIGNMENT 01
PRECALCULUS
MAT 116 MARKS: 75
DUE: TO BE ANNOUNCED

Solve all the following questions:

1. Plot the points A = (-6, 3), B = (3, -5), C = (-1, 5) and form the triangle ABC. Using slopes formula verify
whether the triangle is a right triangle or not.

2. Plot the points D = (-2, -1), E = (0, 7), F = (3, 2) and form the triangle DEF. State whether the triangle is an
isosceles triangle, a right triangle, neither of these, or both.

3. Plot the point P = (0, 0), Q = (6, 0), and R = (4, 4) and form the triangle PQR. Find the lengths of the
medians of the triangle.

4. Plot the points A = (0, 0), B = (1, 3), C = (4, 2) and D = (3,-1) and form the quadrilateral. Using slopes
formula determine the name of the quadrilateral.

5. Plot the points A = (-1, 0), B = (2, 3), C = (1,-2) and D = (4, 1) and form the quadrilateral. Using slopes
show that the quadrilateral is a rectangle. Find its area

6. List the intercepts and test for symmetry:

7. Find the equation of the line passing through the centers of the circles
and

8. Consider the circle .

(a) Find the center (h, k) and radius r of the circle.
(b) Find the intercepts (if any) and
(c) Graph the circle by plotting points.

9. Answer the following questions about the function :

(a) Is the point (-1, 1) on the graph of f(x)?
(b) If x = 1, what is f(x)? What point is on the graph of f(x)?
(c) If f(x) = 1, what is x? What points are on the graph of f(x)?
(d) What is the domain of f(x)?
(e) List the x and y intercepts, if any, on the graph of f(x).

10. Let f (x ) = x 2 − 2 x .
(a) Find the average rate of change from x=1 to x=4.
(b) Find the equation of the secant line containing the points (1, f (1)) and (4, f (4)) .
(c) Draw the graph of the secant line.

(a) Find f(2) and f(-6).

(b) Is f(3), f(-4) positive or negative?
(c) For what values of x is f(x) > 0?
(d) For what values of x is f(x) <0?
(e) How often does the line y = 2 intersect the graph?

12. Answer the following questions for the given function:

(a) Find the domain of the function.

(b) Locate any intercepts.
(c) Graph the function.
(d) Find the range.
(e) Is f(x) is continuous on its domain?

13. Graph the function with the help of the basic graph using graphing techniques
showing all the steps.

14. Graph the function using properties of the quadratic functions.

15. A farmer with 3000 meters of fencing wants to enclose a rectangular plot that borders on a straight
highway. If the farmer does not fence the side along the highway, what is the dimensions and largest area
that can be enclosed?

Note: Detailed explanations showing the calculation step by step and legible hand writing
are required for full credit. All questions are of equal value.
