1 If P( A)  0.6 , P ( A | B )  0.6125 and P ( B’)  0.2 , calculate P( A  B)

and P( B | A) . (10 marks)

2 Consider the experiment of tossing a coin twice. Let A be the event

the first toss is a Tail, B the event of one Head and one Tail and C be the

event of no more than one Tail.(10 marks)

a. List the sample space and the set of outcomes in each of A,B and C.

b. Test whether A and B are independent.

c. Test whether B and C are independent.

d. Use the addition formula to calculate P( B  A) .


3 Two six-sided dice are rolled.Calculate the probability that:

(10 marks)

a. the sum of eight is obtained.

b. the sum of eight is obtained but the numbers are not the same.

c. a sum of eight is obtained given the numbers are not the same.

d. the numbers are not the same given the sum of 8 is obtained.

4. Consider the set of five digits {2,6,7,8,9} . (20 marks)

Assume no repetition of digits in any one number can occur.

a. How many three-digit numbers can be formed from this set?

b. How many numbers with at least four digits can be formed?

c. How many five-digit odd numbers can be formed?

d. A five-digit number is chosen at random. What is the probability it

will be an odd number?
