Your portfolio must include six written reflections about your teaching practices in early childhood education.
Each one of these six Competency Statements must be written in paragraph form (no more than 500 words

supports the functional areas identified.

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment

Functional Area 1: Safe

Why is it important to provide a safe environment that teaches children safe practices?
It is very important to provide a safe environment to the children in the classroom because when kid does not
feel safe at their school, child care center or home it’s mental health suffers and negatively impact on their
physical, emotional development and academic performance. To thrive academically, emotionally and socially
students require to feel safe and supportive at school or afterscool environment to develop a strong, independent

I use these strategies to strengthen children’s awareness of how to interact in safe ways:
I have a chart of safety practices in my class and we do talk about safety once a week. It include list of safe
practices to follow in the class like use walking feets, wash hands before and after meal

Functional Area 2: Healthy

Why is it essential to create a learning environment that promotes children’s health and wellness?
Children learn how to follow healthy habbits from the very young age from their families and surounding
enviornment. Child care programs must provide environments that are clean and that prevent the spread of
communicable diseases. It is care givers responsibility to make sure infants and toddlers have a safe and healthy
environment for play and learn during the time when the kids are in their care.

I promote good nutrition, healthy habits, and safe interactions in my classroom and in outdoor areas in
these ways:
Children's health requirements include physicals, immunizations, and how the program must handle sick children
and store and give medication. Program staff health requirements include physicals, tuberculosis testing, drug
screening, and required vaccinations.

Functional Area 3: Learning Environment

Why are planning elements related to physical space and to use of time so important in early childhood
environments?

These examples are ways that I encourage appropriate engagement, exploration, and learning in my classroom:

CS I a. Nutrition
Think about the sample menu in your resource collection (RC I-2).

How does this menu represent your commitment to providing carefully balanced nutrition for the children
in your care?

CS I b. Physical Environment
Think about the physical environment of your classroom.
