Unit 13: Introduction to Argumentative Writing • Grade 10

Hard Work Over Talent

You might have asked yourself this question at least once: “Which will give me better
results: hard work or talent?” Over the years, the debate between hard work and talent has
gotten more heated. With the recent shift in perspectives, sometimes being labeled as “a
genius” or"talented" can make someone develop one of two things: complacency that leads
to a lack of desire to exert enough effort to do things, or an intense fear of failure that can
hinder a person’s will to make an effort. Therefore, at the end of the day, hard work trumps
talent.

In studies on hard work and talent, many researchers conclude that hard work pays off
more than ability does. Ericsson, Krampe, and Tech-Romer have discussed deliberate
practice and how 10,000 hours worth of perseverance, training, and hard work shape the
success of a person even if he or she does not have an inborn talent for a particular field.
Observations made by professionals have also shown that while talent can make things
easier for a person, it is still through hard work that one achieves his or her goals.

Hard work pays off. For example, at school, let's compare two students: a student who has
an innate talent in art and the ability to produce quality output but makes excuses to be lax
with his or her work, and a student who is not as gifted but always exerts maximum effort
and thoughtful planning to accomplish his or her tasks. The gifted student may have had
the potential to get a higher mark, but the odds are that the hard-working student will
outdo him or her because the latter gave all his or her best and worked hard to achieve his
or her goal.

A similar situation can also happen in the workplace. According to the infographic
published by Davitt Corporate Partners, talented people can be outshined by their
hard-working fellows. Hard-working people succeed because of the effort and
perseverance that they put in their work.

Some people may say that talent is everything one needs to succeed. However, a natural
talent not nurtured early on and not used properly later in life can only bring so much to a
person. For example, famous people like Oprah and Walt Disney were once called names
for “not having enough talent” and “lacking the imagination” to accomplish their lofty
dreams. These personalities persisted and worked hard to hone their skills, and eventually
reached their goals. Having talent is an advantage, but it is hard work that brings further
learning, development, and success.

Hard work is more valuable than talent. It hones important values and skills, such as
perseverance and grit. One may not be the most talented person, but with enough
persistence and hard work, he or she can get further in life than a talented person without
the grit to match.
