introduction

In the following work, the steps 1 through 4, I've been actively engaged in
various tasks related to environmental issues, vocabulary, and interaction
with peers and a tutor. In Step 1, I've checked and developed content for
an eBook related to B1 level modules, specifically focusing on Modules 9,
10, 11, and 12. In Step 2, I matched environmental terms with their
meanings, enhancing my environmental vocabulary. In Step 3, I
completed listening practice related to environmental issues. Finally, in
Step 4, I participated in a synchronous meeting, discussing various
aspects of the topics covered and answering questions related to personal
interests and environmental concerns.
Step 1: Checking the eBook Content.

Module 9 Adjectives:
Module 10 Adjective clauses with relative pronouns:
Module 11 Restrictive and non-restrictive adjective clauses:
Module 12 Reported speech:
Step 2: Focus on vocabulary.

According to the Environmental issues lexicon and vocabulary in use,

match the terms with their corresponding meanings. For that, you can

check what you developed in Task 2: written production for

remembering some terminology that helps you to complete this

activity. When you finish this step, remember to share it on the

forum.

1.Environment 2. Carbon dioxide 3. Flood 4. Natural

resources 5. Global warming 6.Greenhouse effect 7.

Deforestation 8. Oil slick 9. Endangered species 10. Pollution

11. Drought 12. Fumes 13. Waste 14. Carbon monoxide 15.

Biodiversity

Answer:

Endangered species Birds/plants/species animals or plants which may

soon not exist because there are very few now alive.

Biodiversity Variety of plant and animal species that exist in a

particular environmental area.

Carbon dioxide The poisonous gas formed by the burning of carbon,

especially in the form of car fuel.

Deforestation The cutting down of trees in a large area; the

destruction of forests.

Environment Air, water, and land in or on which people, animals and

plants live.

Global warming Increase in world temperatures caused by polluting

gases.

Oil slick A layer of oil that is floating over a large area of the surface

of the sea.

Pollution Damage caused to water, air... by harmful substances or

waste.

Carbon monoxide The gas formed when carbon is burned, or when

people or animals breathe out.

Drought A long period when there is little or no rain.

Flood A large amount of water covering an area that is usually dry.

Greenhouse effec An increase in the amount of carbon dioxide

andother gases in the atmosphere.

Fumes Strong, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous gas or smoke.

Natural resources Things such as minerals, forests, coal,

etc. which exist in a place and can be used by people.

Waste Unwanted matter or material of any type, often that which is

left after useful substances or parts have been removed.

Step 3: Listening practice.

Now, listen to the audio about environmental issues by

clicking here: environmental issues. Then, according to

what you listened to, complete the items with the words

in the box. When you solve it, share it on the forum.

- oil spill - poor air quality - extreme weather

- water scarcity - sustainable environment

- Pollution - Flooding - Oil spills - carbon

footprint - melting ice cap - wind power

- drought – Fracking - forest fires

Answer:

Item a: There is a global water crisis water scarcity and drought have

left to 844 million people lacking access to clean water.

Item b: Oil accidents at sea can cause oil spills which contaminate the
ocean water, resulting in the death of sea birds and other forms of

marine life.

Item c: Growing trees, plants and your own vegetables help

contribute to a sustainable environment.

Item d: Fracking or drilling on the ground for oil and gas, often

contaminates the water supplies.

Item e: Increase Flooding is a consequence of deforestation which is

the cutting down of too many trees.

Item f: One of the most common forms of renewable energy is wind

power which electricity generated by wind turbines.

Item g: Air pollution and poor air quality is a problem in many cities

around the world.

Item h: Extreme weather includes tornados, cyclones and extremely

high or low temperatures.

Item i: Cars and planes burn fuel, when you travel by plane or car,
you contribute to the burning of fuel; this is your carbon footprint.

Item j: Polar bears living in the artic are impacted by

the melting ice cap.

Item k: forest fires seem to be hotter and worst every

summer.

Step 4 Spoken interaction.

In this step, you must attend and participate in one of the five

synchronous meeting (STT= Students’ Talking Time) for interacting with

your tutor and e-mates, where you will comment and explain the issues

developed in the steps 2 and 3.

Some of the questions that may appear on the game are:

a. Tell me about yourself. (Personal information).

b. What do you do to help the environment?

c. What is R-R-R?

d. How can you lower your carbon footprint?

e. What is the difference between carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide?

f. What is the greenhouse effect?

g. What do you like to do?

h. Why fracking is so dangerous?

i. What is the global warming?

j. In your opinion, why is water shortage happening in some parts of

Colombia? How could it be solved?

Answer:

a. Tell me about yourself (personal information).

My name is luis felipe rodriguez huila, I am Colombian born in cali, I am 26

years old and the personal experience I want to share is that of a hiking trip
through the Amazon rainforest. I was part of a group of nature enthusiasts
exploring this unique ecosystem. Our guide emphasized the importance of
preserving the environment and highlighted the effects of deforestation. Most
surprising was visiting an indigenous community that had integrated
sustainable practices into their way of life, which deepened my appreciation
for environmental conservation and the role we can play in protecting our
planet.

b. What do you do to help the environment?

I help the environment in my neighborhood by picking up trash from the

streets and parks, making sure it is disposed of properly. I also report a street
lighting problem to reduce energy consumption.

c. What is R-R-R?

R-R-R stands for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, which are the three key
principles for managing waste and minimizing environmental impact.

d. How can the carbon footprint be reduced?

Reducing our carbon footprint can be achieved through a variety of actions,

such as improving energy efficiency at home, using public transportation or
carpooling, opting for renewable energy sources, reducing, reusing and
recycling materials, conserving water, adopting a sustainable diet, minimizing
air travel, planting trees and using environmentally friendly products.
Supporting policies and businesses that prioritize sustainability and educating
yourself and others on environmental issues are also essential steps to
reducing your carbon footprint. Even small changes in your daily life can have
a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

e. What is the difference between carbon monoxide and carbon

dioxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion,

while carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global
warming.

f. What is the greenhouse effect?

It is the process by which certain gases in the earth's atmosphere trap heat
from the sun, causing global temperatures to rise.

g. What do you like to do?

My interests and hobbies are hiking, camping and sports. These activities have
made me more environmentally conscious as I actively work to preserve
natural resources while hiking and camping. In addition, I use my passion for
sports to be an environmental activist and inspire others to appreciate and
protect the planet.

h. Why is fracking so dangerous?

Because they are the environmental and health risks associated with hydraulic
fracturing (fracking), such as groundwater contamination, air pollution and
earthquakes.

i. What is global warming?

Global warming as the long-term increase in the average temperature of the

Earth's surface, caused primarily by human activities such as burning fossil
fuels and deforestation.

j. In your opinion, why is there water scarcity in some parts of

Colombia? How could it be solved?

Water scarcity in certain regions of Colombia is due to climate change,

overuse of water resources and pollution. It can be solved through better
water management, conservation efforts and sustainable practices.
Step 5: Let’s talk about keeping the environment (final product)

Conclusion

This learning journey has been insightful and rewarding. We've explored
essential environmental vocabulary and concepts like the greenhouse effect,
global warming, and pollution. We've also discussed practical ways to reduce our
carbon footprint and save energy, which are critical in today's world.
