Title: Pulse Rate

AIM: TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF EXERCISE ON PULSE RATE

APPARATUS/MATERIALS: one stopwatch and two volunteers.

METHOD/PROCEDURE:

1. Volunteer B measured Volunteer A’s pulse rate after five minutes of complete rest and the results were
recorded

2. Step 1 was repeated twice more, and the average of the three pulse rate values was calculated and
recorded.

3. Volunteer A then performed four minutes of intense physical activity, where pulse rate readings were
recorded after every minute.

4. Volunteer A was then allowed to rest for another four minutes, where pulse rate readings were recorded
after every minute.

5. A graph was then created to show the data collected from the experiment.

Discussion:
Respiration, the process of taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide, is key to providing energy when
engaging in physical activity. This higher demand for energy impacts the cardiac cycle, which is the heart's usual
rhythm of circulating blood. The pulse demonstrates the heart's functionality by indicating the throbbing in
arteries caused by the heart's beating. The pulse rate was recorded three times during the experiment to ensure
the accuracy and precision of the pulse rate readings before physical activity to obtain an accurate resting heart
rate.
While working out, the heart rate is expected to go up as the muscles require more oxygen and nutrients from the
body than when one is at rest, and after the physical activity the heart rate should remain elevated for a short
period as the body continues to exert effort to recover, but the heart rate will slowly decrease as the body relaxes.
The graph produced shows a rapid increase in heart rate from exercising and a gradual decrease in heart rate when
resting after exercise which was expected. To improve how this lab was conducted, we could have used a pulse
rate meter, to ensure that a person without any medical conditions was chosen and that the individual had a
recommended amount of sleep the night before the lab was conducted.

sources of error:
-Timing issues where Delays or inaccuracies in recording pulse rates at specific intervals could lead to inconsistent
data.
-How intense the volunteer exercised may have caused misleading values

Conclusion:
From this lab, it can be concluded that one's pulse rate will increase after performing vigorous exercise

Reflection:
This lab can assist in bringing awareness to an individual who may have cardiovascular problems. It also shows that
Monitoring your heart rate is crucial for assessing the health of your heart, level of fitness, and early detection of
any issues. It assists in assessing the functionality of your heart and can indicate potential problems such as heart
disease or hypertension.
