BASIC COMPUTER OPERATIONS


Peripherals such as keyboard and mouse help us to do tasks on a computer. The operating system has
features to make it easier to use the computer. These features include icons and menus. Menus are lists of
things you can do to carry out different tasks.

CURSOR MOVEMENT
You can use the keyboard or mouse to move the cursor. The arrow keys move the cursor up, down, left and
right. When you move the mouse the pointer on the screen moves. You can use the mouse buttons and the
wheel to do tasks.

HOW TO USE A MOUSE


1. Click the left mouse button once to select or deselect an item.
Double-click an icon or button on the screen to open a program or start an action.
Click and hold the left button to move an item e.g. an image on a page
2. Click the right mouse button on the item to open a menu for example to see options in a program.
3. Roll the wheel forwards or backwards to move a page up or down.

CLICKING ICONS
icons are pictures on the desktop that open programs or files. Double-click an icon with the left mouse
button. when you right- click on an icon, a pop up or pull-down menu appears.
USING PULL-DOWN MENUS
Pull-down menus are often used in menu bars. Menu bars are found at the top of the screen. By clicking on
a menu item a pull-down menu appears. You select any option you want to perform.

EJECTING DISKS
To remove a CD from the CD drive, you press the button on the front of the drive. This ejects the tray so
that you can lift the CD out. You can also right-click the drive and select Eject from the menu.

HOW TO REMOVE A FLASH DRIVE


Step 1. Click on the system tray icon on the bottom right of the desktop
Step 2. Click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon
Step 3. Choose the drive you want to remove
