Storage System
Storage System
Storage:
Storage is a mechanism that enables a computer
to retain data, either temporarily or permanently.
Storage Categories:
storage can be divided into three categories
1-DAS(Direct Attach Storage)
2-NAS(Network Attach Storage)
3-SAN(Storage Area N etwork)
DAS- Direct Attach Storage
Any storage device that is directly connented
to the system can be called as Direct-Attach
Storage(DAS).
Example:
Internal hard drive
External USB hard drive
Pen drive
Uses of DAS
DAS is typically used for internal storage in
personal computers and servers in the form of
a hard disk drive directly connected to the
motherboard.
Advantages of DAS
High Performance:
DAS offers fast access to data because it is
directly attached to the computer that is
requesting and consuming the data.
Easy Setup:
DAS is simple to setup,configure,and
access.since computers and servers are
typically purchased with internal Direct-
Attaches Storage(DAS), it is available for
immediate use without configuration
Low cost:
DAS is cost efficient when compared to NAS
and SAN ,which require hardware and
software to run and manage the storage
sytem.
You only need to purchase the disk and drive
enclosures as needed.
NAS(Network-Attached Storage)
NAS refer to storage devices that connect on
an ethernt network and provide file access
services to computer systems.
Example:
A company imports any picture and images
everyday it cannot stream this data to the
cloud because of latency
Instead it uses enteprice-class NAS to store
the images and cloud caching to maintain the
connection to the images store on-premises.
SAN(Storage Area
Network)
A SAN ia a network of storage devices that
can be accessed by multiple servers or
computers, providing a shared pool of storage
space.
Each computer on the network can access
storage on the SAN as though they were local
disks connected directly to the computer.
A SAN is a dedicated high-speed network or
subnetwork that interconnects and presents
shared pools of storage devices to multiple
servers.
SAN Architecture
SAN supports three protocols
