DIAVOLO

Solitaire Deck builder using a standard deck of 40 playing cards.

Components: It’s best to use a 40 card deck of Italian playing cards but a standard poker deck
with the 8, 9, and 10 cards removed will work as well.

Theme: Adventure into the depths of hell to vanquish the prime evils and their servants..

Goal: Win the game by removing all cards from the enemy deck. If the player can not take an
action on their turn, they lose. The player will manage their deck by purchasing and culling
cards so that they are better equipped at fighting the prime evils.

Setup: Aces count as 1’s. Take all the 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s and shuffle them to create the player
deck. Shuffle all other cards into the Enemy deck. Reveal 4 cards to make an enemy row.
Draw a starting hand of 4 cards from the player deck.

The play area will look like this:

Values:
Each card’s strength is it’s nominal value with
Aces = 1
Fante/Jacks = 8
Cavallo/Queens = 9
Re/Kings = 10

Gameplay:

A player will play 2 cards each turn. The first card is the leading card and the second card is
the following card. The leading card determines what action the player is taking depending on
the suit of the card. While the following card may act as a bonus to some actions. A player can
only take a valid action if he or she can play the required cards and cannot take the same action
two turns in a row.

The following actions that the player can take are:

Attacking- (Italian=Swords, Poker=Clubs)

Destroy any card in the row as long as the sum of the leading and following card is equal or
greater than a card in the enemy row. One of the suits from the leading or following card must
match the target card in the enemy row. Destroy a card by moving it into the elimination pile.

Buying - (Italian=Coins, Poker=Diamonds)

Take any card in the enemy row where its value is equal or less than the sum of the leading and
following cards. Face cards such as Jack, Queen, and King can not be bought. Place the
target card from the enemy row into the player’s hand.

Resting - (Italian=Cups, Poker=Hearts)

Place leading and following cards into the discard pile.

Banish - (italian=Clubs, Poker=Spades)

Move the following card to the elimination pile and choose any enemy in the row and place that
card at the bottom of the enemy deck.

Cleanup
After taking an action, place the following card (if not banish) and then the leading card into the
discard pile. The top card of the discard pile should always show the last played action by
showing the last leading card. This reminds the player which action they cannot take the next
round. Refill hand by drawing cards from the player deck until a full hand of 4 cards. If the deck
is ever out of cards, shuffle all but the top discard card, into a new player deck and continue
drawing. Additionally, refill the enemy row to 4 cards if there is an enemy deck left.
Winning / Losing
Win the game if you defeat all 28 cards in the enemy deck + enemy row. If all cards are gone,
either in your deck or in the elimination pile, the player wins. If the player can not perform an
action because they can not fulfill any action requirement, they lose the game.

Strategy
● Buy a well rounded suit of cards so that you have plenty of actions to take
● Use Banish to move harder enemies to the bottom to fight later when you have a
stronger deck.
● Use Banish to cull weaker cards
● Attacking is the only way to defeat the face cards, but it can also be used to defeat
numbered cards as well.
