Since his childhood, Christopher Columbus had heard strange tales of the great wealth of the East. He was a
man of great courage and adventure. He was determined to find a sea route to the East. He wanted to set up business
and bring back silk and spices from there.
Columbus thought that since the world was round, he would ultimately reach the East even if he sailed
westwards. He took a crew of 88 sailors and sailed with his three ships in 1492. Two months later, he reached a small
island in the Bahamas. Columbus thought that he had reached India and so he called the inhabitants of that island,
Indians. Little did he know that he had reached America. Even to this day, the native inhabitants of America are called
‘Red Indians’.
When Columbus came back to Spain, he brought with him unknown plants, birds and animals. He also brought
few native Indians with him. The people of Spain were amazed at all that Columbus had brought back. The most
strange part of the whole incident was that Columbus himself did not realise that in his search for the East, he had
accidently discovered America.

Class: 8 Sub: Grammar Date:07-10-2024
Name:
I.Read the passage carefully and answer the following : 5

The great advantage of early rising is the good start which helps us a great deal in our day’s work. The early
riser can do a large amount of hard work before other men get out of bed. In the early morning, the mind is fresh and
there are few distractions, so the work done at that time is generally well done. In many cases, the early riser also finds
time to take some exercise in the fresh monring air and this exercise supplied him with a fund of energy that will last
until evening. By beginning so early, he knows that he has a plenty of time to do thoroughly all work he can be expected
to do and is not tempted to hurry overy any part of it. All this work being Bfinished in good time, he has a long interval of
rest in the evening before the timely hour when he goes to bed. He gets to sleep several hours before midnight at the
time when sleep is most refreshing and after a sound night’s rest rises early next morning in good health and spirit for
the labour of a new day.

It is very plain that such a life as this, is far more conductive to health than that of the man who shortens his
waking hours by rising late and gets only a little leisure for the necessary rest. Anyone who lies in bed late must, if he
wished to do a full day’s work, go on working correspondingly late hour and deny himself the hour or two of evening
exercise that he ought to take for the benefit of his health. But inspite of all his efforts, he will probably not produce as
good results as the early riser because he misses the best working hours of the day.

 Answer the following :

1. What is the advantage of rising early?
2. Why is the work done in the early morning done well?
3. What does the late riser misses?
 Fill in the blanks:
1. By beginning so early, he knows that he has a plenty of time to do ____________ all work
he can be expected to do and is not tempted to hurry over any part of it.
