Define Function and it’s types:-

Function: A function is defined as a realtion between a set of inputs having one output each. In
simple words, a function is a relationship between inputs where each input is realted to excatly
one output. Every function has domain and range. A function is generally denoted by f(x) where
x is the input. The general representation of a function is y=f(x).

Example: f(x)= 3x.

Types of functions:-

1) Algebraic Functions:- Algebraic functions are those functions which area defined by algebraic
expressions. We classify algebraic functions as follows:
i) Polynomial Function: A pokynomial function is a function that can be
n n−1 ❑
expressed in the form: f(x) = a n x + a n−1 x + . . . + a 1 x +a 0, Where
a n + a n−1 , . . . , a 0 are constants and n is a non-negative integer.
ii) Linear Function: A linear function is a polynomial function of degree
1, which can be expressed in the form: F(x) = mx + b, Where m is the
slope and b is the y-intercept. Example: An example of a linear
function is: f(x) =2x+3This function has a slope of 2 and a y-intercept
of 3.

∀ x ∈ X, is called an identity function. Its domain and

iii) Identity Function: For any set X, a function l: X→X of the form l(x) = x

range is the set X itself. In particular, if X =R, then

l(x)=x, for all x∈R, is the identity function.

→Y defined by C(x)=a, ∀ x ∈ , a ∈ Y and fixed, is called a

iv) Constant Function: Let X and Y be sets real numbers. A function C: X

constant function. For exalmple, C:R→R defined by C(x) =2,

∀ x ∈R us a constant funciton.
P( x )
v) Rational Function: A function R(x) of the form , where both P(x)
Q(x)
and Q(x) are polynomial functions and Q(x)≠ 0, is called a rational
function. The domain of rational function R(x) is the ser of all real
numbers x for which Q(x)≠ 0.
