WEEKLY REPORT
WEEK – 3 (From Dt………..….. to Dt………..……)

Objective of the Activity Done:

Detailed Report:There are many things to know about onion crop .it grows in any season.

Onion needs a temperate climate and alluvial soil to grow in.

Depending on the onion growing time and place of cultivation, onion can be grown as long day onions
(for plains) or short day onions (ideal for hilly regions).

Although it is a temperate crop, onion cultivation can be possible under sub-tropical, temperate or tropical
climate.
A mild, gentle weather that is not too rainy, too cold or too hot is ideal for onion growing.

However, it can withstand extreme weather conditions at younger stage.

Short day onions that need 10-12 hours of day length are grown in plains while long day onions requiring 13-14
hours of day length are grown in the hilly areas

WEEKLY REPORT

WEEK – 4 (From Dt………..….. to Dt………..……)

Objective of the Activity Done:

Detailed Report: There are many things to know about maize and ground nut crops

ABOUT MAIZE:

Scientific name of maize is Zea mays.

The word ‘mahiz’ in Taino evolved as ‘maiz’ in Spanish which later in English came to be called ‘maize’.

It is known by different names all around the world.

However, it is most widely called as corn. In India it is knows as MakkaCholam, Maka, Bhutta etc.

An interesting factor to note here is that corn has no wild variety. It has only cultivated variety.

It grows as tall as 10 ft in height. Some of the natural strains can also attain a height of 43 ft

ABOUT GROUND NUT:

Groundnut does well in the well drained, light textured, loose, friable and sandy and sandy loam soils
which helps in easy penetration of pegs and their development and also harvesting.

Clay or heavy soils are not suitable for this crop as they interfere in penetration of pegs and make
harvesting quite difficult.

Groundnut is sensitive to soil salinity.

It gives good yields in the soil having the pH between 6.0 to 7.5, well supplies with calcium and a moderate
amount of organic matter

WEEKLY REPORT

WEEK – 5 (From Dt………..….. to Dt………..……)

Objective of the Activity Done:

Detailed Report:there are more things to know about the tomato crop.

It is mainly used as food and cash crop globally.

High cost of inputs, pest and diseases, postharvest losses and marketing are the major challenges
facing tomato production globally.
Due to good adaptability, heirloom tomato varieties are becoming popular especially where
farmers practice tomato grafting using the indigenous varieties as rootstocks.

Organic tomato production is an emerging market niche.

Thus, farmers have been making strides towards compliance to organic and other sustainable
standards.

It gives good yields in the soil having the pH between 6.0 to 7.5, well supplies with calcium and a moderate
amount of organic matter
Describe the problems you have identified in the community

Major horticulture production constraints include pests, drought, shortage of fertiliser, and the
price of fuel for pumping irrigation water.

Emerging pests and pathogens and increasing pesticide resistance continue to pose significant
challenges to horticulture.

Superficial damage to fresh vegetable and fruit produce is unacceptable to consumers, but this is
coupled with a desire for no pesticide residues in food.
A total of ten problems in horticultural production were identified and, poor access to inputs, high
fuel costs, pests and diseases, high input costs, insufficient infrastructure, lack of finance, shortage
of skilled labour, and
breakdown of irrigation systems were found to be the major production problems (85.23% ...

Additionally, climate change, the loss of productive soils, in- creased cost of land, lack of water,
and loss of low-cost labor all pose significant threats to the development of the horticulture
industry.

Production and marketing problems faced by subsistence horticulture farmers in Botswana hinder
the potential production which forces the country to import 80% of the fruit and vegetable
demand
The local farmers fail to compete with the high quality and low priced imported vegetables. The
problems in disposing off the horticultural produce depress the farmers and this negatively affects
local horticultural
production and farm income

Short-term and long term action plan for possible solutions for the problems identified and that could be
recommended to the concerned authorities for implementation.

Short term problems:

After the phenomenal success of green revolution, India was able to meet her food demands at least
for wheat .

After the phenomenal success of green revolution, India was able to meet her food demands at least
for wheat

it was confined only in some areas of India specially Punjab and Hariyana where the big land forms
and rich farmers were present .
Description of the Community awareness programme/s conducted w.r.t the problems and their outcomes.

He said that plantation of suitable horticulture crops is the best source of livelihood for hill
people

as crops produced from hill areas are free from chemicals and people usually like it.

The program was also attended by member of MSCST, Tara Manchin Hangzo; deputy
commissioner of Noney, Joseph Pauline Kamson and member of MSCST Lungthaona Rongmei.

Emerging pests and pathogens and increasing pesticide resistance

continue to pose significant challenges to horticulture. Superficial damage to fresh vegetable and fruit
