Description Here

Network time analysis (NTA) in construction

NETWORK TIME methods and project management involves

assessing and optimizing project schedules
using network diagrams and scheduling
ANALYSIS techniques. This process ensures that the
project is completed efficiently within the
stipulated time frame. The two primary
methods used in network time analysis are the
Critical Path Method (CPM) and the Program
Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT).

UNDERSTANDING NTA
Key Concepts

Network Diagrams Float/Slack Time

Visual representation of project tasks and their The amount of time that a task can be delayed

Critical Path Task Duration

The sequence of task that determines the the time required to complete a task.
minimum project duration.

STEPS IN TIME-ANALYSIS
OF NETWORKS
The following steps are involved in the network
time analysis :

1. Define Project Activities.

2. determine Task Dependencies
3. Create a Network Diagram
4. Perform Time Analysis using CPM and PERT

1.Define Project Activities

Identify Tasks: Break down the project into individual

tasks or work packages.
Estimate Durations: Provide estimates for how long each
task will take.

2. Determine Task
Dependencies

Identify Relationships: Determine which tasks must

precede or follow others.
Create Dependency Links: Establish logical relationship
between tasks (e.g., finish-to-start, start-to-start)

3. Create a Network Diagram
Construct the Diagram: Represent tasks as nodes and
dependencies as arrows in the network diagram.
Types of Diagrams:
B D E
1. Activity-on-Node (AON): Tasks are nodes; arrows
represent dependencies.
2. Activity-on-Arrow (AOA): Tasks are arrow; nodes represent
milestones or events.

4. Perform Time Analysis

using CPM and PERT.
1. Critical Path Method (CPM) is used to identify the sequence of tasks
that are critical for completing a project in the shortest possible time.
2. Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a project
management tool used to plan, schedule, and control complex tasks. It
is designed to analyze the time required to complete each task within a
project and to identify the minimum time needed to complete the
entire project.

CRITICAL PATH
METHOD (CMP)
Forward Pass
Early Start (ES): Calculate the earliest time a task
can start based on its predecessors.
Early Finish (EF): Calculate the earliest time a
task can finish ( EF = ES + Duration )

Backward Pass

Late Finish (LF): Calculate the latest time a task

can finish without delaying the project.
Late Start (LS): Calculate the latest time a task
can start ( LS = LF + Duration ).

Float/Slack Time: Calculate the float or slack for

each task ( Float = LS - ES or Float = LF - EF ).

Critical Path Identification: Determine the

longest path through the network with zero float
time. This path dictates the project duration.

PROGRAM EVALUATION AND

REVIEW TECHNIQUE (PERT)
Three - Point Estimation
Optimistic Time (o): The shortest possible time to
complete a task.
Pessimistic Time (P): The longest possible time to
complete a tak.
Most Likely Time (M): The best estimate of the
time required.

Expected Time (TE): Calculate the expected time

for each task using: TE = (O+4M+P)/6
