admit patients under their care.
 Admitting a patient through ER should only be performed by a physician from the admitting department after
getting the approval of the MRP.
 In cases of transfer from another hospital, admission is only carried out after agreement of the MRP. The MRP
who accepted the case should make the necessary arrangements to receive the admission.
 Patients shall be admitted under one of the following classifications; emergency admission or elective
admission. Day case surgery admissions follow the same elective admission process and pathway. Patients
received from outside the hospital on basis of a prior arrangement with the admitting physician follow the same
emergency admission process and pathway.
 The classification of an admission as an emergency or an elective admission is determined by the admitting
MRP.
 Medical management and treatment should not be delayed while waiting for a vacancy.
Admission orders (labs, radiological investigations, and medication) should be carried out in ER pending the
availability of a bed.
POLICY
 The admission diagnosis, the reason for admission, and its type (emergency vs. elective)
should be clearly documented in the "Diagnosis and Plan" part of initial the assessment form
SII>>Provider's templates>> Initial assessment form>> Diagnosis and plan)
(Appendix A: Initial Assessment Admission and Discharge Planning Form)
 The MRP decides the area of admission (ward or critical care area), however, the final choice
of specific room or bed placement is at the discretion of the admission office depending on
the patient's age, condition, and bed availability, in coordination with the Nursing Supervisor
of the receiving unit.
 OPD patients who prove to have an emergency condition that needs admission will be
transferred to ER for emergency evaluation and management, followed by the admission to
either a critical care unit or ward.
