Ordinal numbers help us tell the
order or position of things. For
example, when you stand in line
at the canteen, you are in a
specific position—first, second, or
maybe tenth!

Let’s look at some examples.


Here, I have pictures of medals
from a race: a gold medal for first
place, a silver medal for second
place, and a bronze medal for
third place. Does anyone want to
guess what these numbers
represent? They show who came first,
second, and third in a race!

Exactly! Now let’s practice some

write ordinal numbers. We
already know first (1st), second
(2nd), third (3rd). After that, the rest
follow a simple pattern: fourth,
fifth, sixth, and so on, up to
twentieth (20th).

We also use abbreviations when


we write them:
1st = first
2nd = second
3rd = third
4th = fourth
5th = fifth … and so on, all the
way to 20th.

(The teacher writes the ordinal


numbers 1st to 20th on the board,
encouraging the class to write
them in their notebooks.)
