Chapter 3 Computer
Chapter 3 Computer
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Bell Relay Computers were developed at Bell
Telephone Laboratories under George Stibitz's direction, using
electromechanical relays for fast and accurate calculations. The first electro-
mechanical computer, Mark-1, was created by Dr. Howard Aiken at Harvard
University and produced by IBM in 1944. It could perform rapid calculations and
was a realization of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. IBM later developed
Mark-II through IV computers.

Classification of Computers
Digital Computers: Digital computers work with digits, specifically binary digits
(0s and 1s). They are fast counting devices that perform operations like addition.
Other operations like subtraction, multiplication, and division are achieved
through the addition operation. Digital computer circuits are complex and
follow programmed instructions in a specific language.
We can also classify the computer systems into following categories by using the
capacity performance criteria (size, cost, speed and memory):
Supercomputers
Mainframe computers
Minicomputers, or Midrange computers
Workstations
Microcomputers, or Personal computers
